Asensio 2001 Javier Asensio Crianza Red (Navarra)
Price
$17
Clean and maturing nicely, with on the nose a touch of sweet oak. Like all Asensio wines, this crianza from a great year is juicy and slightly lean. The mouth offers easygoing barrel notes backing up bright berry fruit and finishing touches of black pepper and spice. A wine in its prime.

Asensio 2006 Miguel Asensio Vino Dulce de Moscatel (Spain)

Price
$22
Ripe and honeyed, but also nicely balanced by flower blossom aromas and acidic zest on the palate. For straightforward apricot and peach flavors, this wine serves its purpose. It’s smooth, sweet and easygoing, and overall it’s just elegant and lively enough to jostle your palate.

Asensio 2000 Javier Asensio Cabernet Sauvignon (Navarra)
Price
$29
For Navarra, this is a fairly ripe Cab. The nose shows baked black fruits, cola, herbs and maturity, while the palate is definitely racy and juicy as the acidity is what’s keeping this baby plowing ahead. For New World Cab fans this will seem thin and tart; but given its domain and age, we like it as an Old World throwback.

Asensio 2000 Javier Asensio Reserva Red (Navarra)
Price
$22
Like many Navarran blends, there’s some murky, flat aromas to this blend, but it shows more life in the mouth, where snappy red cherry and wild raspberry flavors take over. The finish is evenly textured and shows a bit of leftover oak resin. An honest wine but certainly nothing special.

Asensio 2003 Javier Asensio Tinto Red (Navarra)

Price
$10
Almost volatile, but with reduced raisin below. If you are familiar with hot-climate California Zinfandel, this is not unlike that. It has a vinegary attack and then a strange but limited sweetness lurking in the weeds. A challenged wine.

Asensio 2004 Javier Asensio Merlot (Navarra)

Price
$29
Raw and resiny, with no peg for you to hang your hat on. The palate is sharp and short on ripeness, while the finish settles on hot. Just an aggressive wine with little polish. Not worth the price.
