Astrales 2005 Red (Ribera del Duero)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $60
This is a huge and impressive step up from the 2003 Astrales, which was fine but not at this level. Here we’re talking about color, bouquet, palate feel, intense flavors, finish, you name it. It’s pure, ultratasty, chocolaty, smooth and pleasurable. Astrales is the complete package and a wine to watch.  — M.S.  (11/15/2008)

Astrales 2007 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $67
Shows almost all that’s great about the region: dark, smoky, floral berry and chocolate aromas followed by juicy, acid-driven boysenberry, spice, bitter chocolate and peppery flavors. An excellent effort for a tough vintage, with dynamite power and a poise. Drink 2012–2018.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Astrales 2006 Christina Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $87
Not as expressive as other Astrales wines, but still very rich and bruising, with a smooth, lush, wonderful mouthfeel and attractive aromas. Concentrated but not as voluminous as many RDD top-rate wines, with flavors of fig, wild berry, chocolate and pepper. Lots to ponder here; an excellent example of what this winery is capable of. Drink 2012–2020.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Astrales 2006 Red (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $67
Astrales has really nailed it the past couple of years, and while the ’06 isn’t quite as good as 2005, it’s still an excellent wine. Blackberry, tobacco and cocoa aromas lead into a stacked flavor profile of boysenberry and plum. And on the finish it expands and brings vanilla and fudge into play. Drink now and over the next six years.  — M.S.  (8/1/2009)

Astrales 2003 Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $55
This is a full-bodied, modern-style RDD that teeters on the edge of heavy and sun-baked but manages to keep itself upright. Very ripe and jammy on the palate, with concentrated dark-fruit flavors. Meaty and a bit soft. A wine that shows the typicity of the vintage.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)
