August Briggs 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)
Price
$50
Deep and sweet, but there’s also an unusual and appetizing edge offered via cola nut and root beer. Any tartness to the blackberry fruit is offset by vanillin oak. Pleasurable, full-bodied and on the money. It’s stylish good stuff with a correct amount of woody character.

August Briggs 2008 Frediani Vineyard Charbono (Napa Valley)
Online Exclusive
Price
$38
A rich and sweetly fruity wine with many of the same flavors as Cabernet Sauvignon, except there’s something meaty and piney lurking behind the blackberries. It’s very dry, and softer than other Charbonos, with a creaminess that may limit its cellar life. But it’s a robust, full-bodied wine for drinking over the next 4–5 years with a good steak.

August Briggs 2002 Dijon Clones Pinot Noir (Napa Valley)
Price
$35
What a great wine. Dry, smooth and complex, with a silky texture and nice, firm acids, as well as an opulent layer of what tastes like fine French oak. The flavors are fully ripe, suggesting black and red cherries with a dusting of sweet cocoa.

August Briggs 2000 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)
Price
$32
Supple and plump, this Pinot announces itself with a nuanced red berry, cinnamon-clove spice, soy and tree-bark bouquet. The palate’s velvety feel, subtle acidity and caramel-tinged sweet fruit have great appeal. Closes stylishly with a ripe and spicy, almost sappy-feeling, softly tannic finish. Drink now through 2006.

August Briggs 2002 Zinfandel (Napa Valley)
Price
$32
Does a great job of offering ripe, forward blackberry, black cherry, briary wild berry and peppery spice flavors upfront, with firm tannins, in a wine that’s totally dry and not over the top in alcohol. You’ll find Zin’s muscular wild personality dressed in the Armani of Napa.

August Briggs 1997 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)
Price
$28
Lots of smoky, toasty accents on the plump blackberry and cherry fruit. Spicy fruit, anise, earth, and leather add to the aromatic elements when the wine hits your palate.

August Briggs 2001 Zinfandel (Napa Valley)
Price
$32
. A fairly complex blend of toasty oak-framed black cherry, blackberry, bing cherry, spice, herb and vanilla flavors framed in firm, supple tannins. The finish is moderate in length.

August Briggs 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (Sonoma Mountain)
Price
$50
Black fruit with a touch of prune and meat on the nose. Oak-lashed plums and currants in the mouth taste a bit burnt from the wood treatment. A woody express train, with lots of coffee. Fans of dark, structured, oaky wines will get a kick out of this one.
