Austin Hope 2009 Hope Family Vineyard Grenache (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
The Hope winery has produced one of the best Grenaches of the vintage. Avoids the common pitfalls of this tricky variety to give a bone dry, softly tannic wine that’s rich in black cherry, prosciutto and black pepper flavors. The texture is so silky, you could substitute this for Pinot Noir.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)

Austin Hope 2003 Mer Soleil Vineyard Roussanne (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  1. $37
Terrific wine, rich as sin, oozing honey, apricot, lemondrop and exotic quince and pineapple flavors. Yet great cleansing acidity gives it backbone. Finishes with a caramelized richness.  — S.H.  (11/15/2006)

Austin Hope 2009 Hope Family Vineyard Syrah (Paso Robles)

  1. $42
This is a delicious wine. The blackberry and cherry jam, chocolate, anise and pepper flavors have a pie filling richness, complete with the smoky-sweet pastry crust. Yet it’s totally dry. Feels fine and distinguished, if a little hot in alcohol. Drink now–2012.  — S.H.  (3/1/2011)

Austin Hope 2006 Hope Family Vineyard Grenache (Paso Robles)

  1. $42
Fat, fleshy, soft and a little hot from high alcohol. That’s the best way to describe this Grenache. Its warm-climate California personality is appealing, with flavors of cherries, black raspberries, currants, cocoa, roasted meat, violets and spice.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Austin Hope 2004 Hope Family Vineyard Syrah (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
The very hot vintage took its toll on this 100% varietal Syrah. While it’s nicely dry, with a finely tannic structure, it tastes a bit soft and hot. The cherry and blackberry flavors have a dessicated, raisiny edge. Drink now.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)

Austin Hope 2003 Hope Family Vineyard Syrah (Paso Robles)

  1. $42
The challenges during this hot vintage were obvious. The wine is virtually sweet in dessert pastry flavors, raspberry, fig newton, black cherry pie and smoky, charry new oak and vanilla. It has good acidity and grip, but you find yourself wishing it were a touch drier.  — S.H.  (11/15/2006)

Austin Hope 2005 Hope Family Vineyard Grenache (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $42
You’ll find plenty of the red cherry flavors that mark this variety, along with lots of smoky vanilla and caramel, from 70% new oak. That said, the structure is too soft and simple. The wine would benefit from greater acidity and tannins, the lack of which make it taste sweeter than it really is.  — S.H.  (12/15/2007)

Austin Hope NV Troublemaker Red (Paso Robles)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $18
This blend of Syrah, Grenache and a few other varieties feels hot in the mouth, even though the alcohol is officially only 14.5%. It’s thin and dry in jammy berry flavors.  — S.H.  (11/1/2011)
