Babcock 2009 Microcosm Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)
-
$50
From the southernmost part of the appellation comes this very deeply flavored Pinot Noir. It bursts in the mouth with mushu plum sauce and cherry fruit and the most marvelous feral notes of mushrooms, minerals, hung meat, forest spices and herbs. It’s quite a tannic wine, giving it a brooding quality. Huge, massive, stunning. Should glidepath through the next 6–8 years.

Babcock 2009 Upper Crust Syrah (Santa Maria Valley)
-
$50
The real deal in a cool-climate Syrah. Dark and broodingly dry, it smells like grilled lamb, roasted rosemary, white pepper and other Provençal herbs, blackberries, cassis and smoky oak. High in alcohol but balanced, this 100% varietal wine is huge, powerful, dramatic and tannic. Drink it soon with the best grilled meats.

Babcock 2009 Top Cream Chardonnay (Sta. Rita Hills)
-
$45
A block selection off the estate vineyard. Shows a lovely, firm minerality and leesy note, with rich citron, Asian pear, pineapple, baked apple, peach pie and spice flavors. An elaborate wine, amazingly rich and layered, yet so light and silky in the mouth.

Babcock 1999 Fathom Red (Santa Barbara County)
-
$35
Mainly Cabernet Franc and Merlot with a little Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine advances the case for South Coast claret. It’s one of the best ever from Santa Barbara. Juicy, ripe, balanced, rich, elegant, fairly soft and covered with lush oak, it’s sheer pleasure now.

Babcock 1997 Grande Cuvée-Estate Pinot Noir (Santa Ynez Valley)
-
$40
Opens with a dark, rich nose with deep black fruits, cassis, bacon and spice. Very dense for Pinot Noir, almost Rhône-like. Deep, inky and tight right now. Great finish, with broad mouth-coating tannins. Try in 2 to 4 years.

Babcock 2009 Ocean's Ghost Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)
-
$55
Vibrant, fresh, lively, with uplifted aromas and flavors of cherries, minerals, coffee, mushrooms, grilled meats and spices. A very rich wine, elaborately layered and multidimensional. Pretty tannic, which gives it a chewy quality. Drink this great wine with a steak, or age it for up to six years.

Babcock 2007 Grand Cuveé Estate Grown Pinot Noir (Sta. Rita Hills)
-
$45
A beautiful Pinot, silky, smooth and delicious. Although it has a tannic density that will permit aging, its lush black cherry, mocha and oak flavors permit it to be enjoyable now, especially with duck, lamb and steak.
