A selection from the Quinta da Bacalhôa vineyard, this sumptuous wine layers the darkest fruit flavors with a structure that is solid, dense and powerful. Juicy plums, licorice and a firm, stalky edge go with wood aging and bone-dry tannins. Age for 5–6 years.

Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal 2007 Quinta da Bacalhôa Red (Terras do Sado)

Price
$30
One of Portugal’s oldest plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, from 1974, produced at the beautiful renaissance estate of Bacalhôa. With its dark color, elegant richness, black currant and red berry fruits, this remains a great benchmark, a brilliant transformation of the French grapes into Portuguese tastes.

A selection of parcels from the the Bacalhôa estate, this Cabernet, Merlot and Petit Verdot blend is still showing its youth. Napa Valley meets Portugal, it is certainly impressive, ripe, with dense and dusty tannins, an impressive concentration of rich black fruits and hints of green pepper. The dry edge will go over the next 5–6 years.

The flagship white from Bacalhôa is a full-bodied blend of Fernão Pires and Chardonnay. There is both freshness and richness here, with a tight texture of lime zest and apple skins giving lively acidity. The finish is more tropical, with smooth creamy flavors.

Bacalhôa Wines of Portugal 2010 Cova da Ursa Chardonnay (Setubal)
This single-vineyard Chardonnay has a rich, New World feel to it. The new wood is very present, as well as the tropical fruit and spice flavors. It is a rounded, powerful wine, maybe too oaked at this stage. but likely to balance out in a year.
