Baer 2007 Ursa Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $35
A five-grape Bordeaux blend dominated by Merlot and Cab Franc, this is a deft mix of grapes nicely melded into a complete and satisfying wine. It’s anchored by black cherry and cassis fruit, supple and focused. Surrounding that core fruit are layers of smoke, black olive, pencil lead and coffee grounds. It resonates gracefully through a long finish.  — P.G.  (4/1/2011)

Baer 2008 Arctos Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $41
Baer’s Arctos blend is about three fifths Cabernet Sauvignon, and here the grape shows less fat, and more structure than in the previous vintage. It’s a better wine, sleek and yet fruity, with a pleasing mix of blackberry and cassis. The tannins are forceful, herbal, and sturdy, giving the finish a firm spine. The grace notes of clove and coffee and loam continue…  — P.G.  (11/1/2011)

Baer 2008 Ursa Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  • Editors' Choice

  1. $35
Merlot and Cab Franc are the stars of this five-grape Bordeaux-style blend. It begins sweetly, with a pretty mix of ripe berries, spicy toast and dark chocolate. The flavors spread across the palate, adding hints of black pepper and sandalwood. Lush, deep, and slightly exotic, this is a real palate-pleaser.  — P.G.  (11/1/2011)

Baer 2003 Ursa Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $29
Soft, smooth, rich and supple, this delicious blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc also includes a dash of Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. There’s loads of black cherry and blackberry fruit flavor, but beyond that the wine shows real stuffing. It gently evolves in the mouth, opening up to reveal layers of tobacco, cherry, tar and light smoke.  — P.G.  (10/1/2006)

Baer 2005 Ursa Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $39
The 2005 Ursa is similar in style to the previous blends – 55% Merlot, 28% Cab Franc, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec and 3% Petit Verdot. A nice ripe vintage, it’s a beefy version of this popular Bordeaux blend, with more black fruits than red, and somewhat rugged, substantial, lightly earthy tannins. As always, it remains forward and accessible, drinking quite…  — P.G.  (8/1/2009)

Baer 2008 Shard Chardonnay (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $21
This lovely Chardonnay, from Stillwater Creek vineyard grapes, is the first from Baer in some years. Ripe and tropical, it nonetheless retains its firm acidity, given the vintage and the vineyard location in the Frenchman Hills. A very fine effort by Lisa Baer, it slides into a satisfying, lightly butterscotch finish.  — P.G.  (11/1/2009)

  1. $21
All Stillwater Creek fruit and 100% varietal, this bright and spicy, unoaked Chardonnay showcases very pretty fresh herb along with the usual green apple and pear fruit flavors. Lively and light, despite its 14.4% alcohol, it’s a versatile and refreshing white.  — P.G.  (4/1/2011)

Baer 2006 Ursa Red (Columbia Valley (WA))

  1. $39
The newest Ursa is 50% Merlot, 24% Cab Franc, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, and it is absolutely delicious right out of the chute; no breathing needed. It’s got plump and sweetly juicy cherry and berry fruit flavors, mixed in with cherry candy, red licorice, anise and spice. Good persistence and length.  — P.G.  (8/1/2009)
