Baldacci 2006 Brenda's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $85
Easily earns its high score for the sheer power and mass, equal to anything out of Napa. Erupts in the most complex blackberries, black currants, licorice and 100% new smoky oak flavors, with a spicy finish that goes on and on. The tannins are strong and fine and impressive. Not for the faint-hearted, and not a wine to drink now, as it will swamp food. Should begin…  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

Baldacci 2008 Brenda's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  1. $105
Huge, tremendous, authoritative and impressive for its sheer volume. It just explodes in blackberries, cassis, dark chocolate, leather, dried herb and smoky oak flavors, with a tangy minerality. The vineyard is in the Stags Leap tenderloin, and the wine combines an approachable drink-me-now quality with obvious ageworthiness through at least 2016. Only 180 cases…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Baldacci 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $55
This is Baldacci’s regular Cab, although most wineries would be content for it to be their reserve. It’s a powerful, rich young wine, massive in blackberry, currant and oak flavors, with a succulent edge of milk chocolate. The tannins are pure Stags Leap, giving a complex contrapuntal balance of grip and structure to the opulent fruit. Just fabulous in every aspect…  — S.H.  (12/31/2007)

Baldacci 2003 Brenda's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $70
Tasted with Baldacci’s regular Cab, this is a slightly tougher, less immediately opulent wine. The fruit is there, but the tannic structure makes it less accessible. Lush plum and prune flavors coat the palate, dusted with oaky notes of chocolate and smoke. Winemaker Rolando Herrera worked at Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars as well as with Paul Hobbs, and he clearly knows…  — W.E.  (9/1/2006)

Baldacci 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $65
Almost as perfect a Stags Leap Cabernet as you can find, showing lush, opulent and immediately appealing flavors. Blackberries, plums, cassis, dark chocolate and sweet oak combine in a spicy swirl. The tannins are fiercely soft, an oxymoron that suggests the wine’s complexity. Yet those same tannins are astringent enough to warrant time in the cellar. Hold until…  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)

Baldacci 2007 Brenda's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $105
Shows its youth in the assaultive tannins that hit the palate with astringent toughness. But underneath are rich, pure and vibrant blackberry, cherry and cassis flavors. A very fine wine, as this bottling tends to be, but one in serious need of cellaring. It’s already throwing some sediment, suggesting it’s impatient to evolve. Give it another 6–8 years.  — S.H.  (6/1/2011)

Baldacci 2006 Black Label Estate Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  1. $65
Massive. Made from 100% Cabernet, and lavish in new French oak, it’s an impressive wine, but not one you want to open now. Everything is on steroids, with a heart of blackberries and currants just waiting to emerge. Cellar through 2011 and try again.  — S.H.  (2/1/2010)

Baldacci 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Stags Leap District)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $49
Size isn’t everything, but in this magnificent 100% Cab, it’s an impressive part of the total package. The blackcurrant and cherry flavors are massive, the oak is impressively strong and spicy, the acidity is balancing, and the tannins are a wonder, softly ripe and firm at the same time. On the finish, the flavors turn even richer, suggesting crème de cassis and…  — W.E.  (9/1/2006)
