Barnett 2006 Rattlesnake Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $125
This is a tremendous Cabernet Sauvignon, but be warned, it’s so tannic, it makes your tongue curl. That’s what mountain grapes, grown at 2,000 feet with low yields and small berries, do. Such is the core of black currants, however, that aging is not a problem. With its dryness, intensity and overall balance, it should easily negotiate the next decade. Really…  — S.H.  (6/1/2009)

Barnett 2005 Rattlesnake Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $120
Rattlesnake Hill is on the estate, more than 2,000 feet up in the Mayacamas above St. Helena. Typically tannic, in the way of Spring Mountain Cabs, the ’05 is a dramatically structured wine that dazzles with power. Made entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon, it shows classic varietal flavors of black currants, cherries, licorice and spices, while mostly new French oak…  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Barnett 2007 Rattlesnake Hill Estate Bottled Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain)

  1. $125
A tremendous wine that easily merits being Barnett’s most expensive release. Shows the ripe blackberry and black currant flavors and new oak that are so easily achieved, with yet near perfect tannins and a dryness unusual in a Cabernet this fruity. The combination of opposites makes this mountain wine noteworthy, as well as ageable. Now–2017.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Barnett 2003 Rattlesnake Hill Cabernet Sauvignon (Spring Mountain)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $110
The fruity intensity of this young Cabernet is impressive, an explosion of cassis and cocoa flavor that dominates the palate. Beyond that is the overall balance. The tannins are sturdy, with good, clean acidity, and the finish is exceptionally long and rich. This classic mountain Napa Cabernet is tough now, and should slowly soften over the next 15 years.  — S.H.  (8/1/2006)

Barnett 2005 Cyrus Ryan Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  1. $90
The wine is enormously ripe, a lip-smackingly fruity 100% Cab that seduces the palate with massive black currant, licorice, sweet date and cedar flavors. Yet it has a tannic astringency that suggests, although it does not require, aging. Should develop well for at least a decade.  — S.H.  (6/1/2008)

Barnett 2007 Cyrus Ryan Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $95
Disconnected in its youth, with separate oak and fruit elements that need time to find each other and marry. The oak shows up as caramel and butterscotch, while the fruit stands aloof, in blackberry and black currant superiority. Seems to have the inherent balance for aging. Try after 2013.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Barnett 2007 Savoy Vineyard Chardonnay (Anderson Valley)

  1. $42
The vineyard is the source of fantastic Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays for several wineries, and Barnett scores big points with this lush, rich but balanced wine. It’s tremendous in pineapple, pear, green apple and oaky vanilla flavors, but beautifully balanced with firm acidity. Represents an impressive step forward for this bottling.  — S.H.  (8/1/2009)

Barnett 2006 Savoy Vineyard Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley)

  1. $52
Barnett is better known as a producer of very good Cabernet. But their Chardonnays can be great, and so can their Pinot Noirs. This single-vineyard bottling has the elegance of the best Anderson Valley Pinots, a dry, crisp wine of great complexity. The flavors of cherries, licorice, Dr. Pepper, sweet Chinese tea and bacon are delicious and compelling.  — S.H.  (7/1/2008)
