Baron Knyphausen 2007 Erbacher Steinmorgen Erstes Gewächs Riesling (Rheingau)

  • Online Exclusive
This terrific dry Riesling features a complex interplay of mineral notes, honey, peach, citrus and dried spices. At 12.5% alcohol, it’s pretty full-bodied and richly textured, with touches of lingering honey and citrus on the long, mineral-inflected finish.  — J.C.  (8/1/2009)

Baron Knyphausen 2010 Erbach Ortslage Kabinett Trocken Riesling (Rheingau)

  1. $32
Combine peachy ripeness and briny minerality and the result is a top-flight dry Riesling. It’s medium-bodied, with a rich, slightly custardy feel to give it extra impact on the palate. Long on the finish. Drink now–2020.  — J.C.  (12/1/2011)

Baron Knyphausen 2009 Erbacher Steinmorgen Auslese Riesling (Rheingau)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $107
A big, sturdy auslese, nearly dry in style yet showing some botrytis and plenty of concentration. Hints of dried apricots and mushrooms lead the way, and there is some citrusy character, but this brooding wine is best served with cheeses or savory dishes.  — J.C.  (3/1/2012)

Baron Knyphausen 2005 Kiedricher Sandgrub Spätlese Riesling (Rheingau)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $23
This delicate wine is waif-like and virtually ephemeral on the nose, with subtle scents of mineral, fresh greens, citrus and apple. In the mouth, it shows similar finesse, striking a fine balance between sweetness and tart green-apple and lime flavors. Finishes long, accented by bright citrus notes.  — J.C.  (12/1/2006)

Baron Knyphausen 2007 Erbacher Marcobrunn Erstes Gewächs Riesling (Rheingau)

  • Online Exclusive
Knyphausen’s 2007 Erstes Gewächs wines from Erbach make a stunning couple. The Marcobrunn comes across as slightly cooler, not quite as rich or dense as the Steinmorgen, but possible more elegant. The apple, melon, citrus and mineral notes are delicately interwoven on the long, classy finish.  — J.C.  (8/1/2009)

Baron Knyphausen 2009 Erbacher Michelmark Erstes Gewächs Riesling (Rheingau)

  1. $57
Like several other of the ’09 Erstes Gewächs, this one seems sweeter than usual, with baked apple and streusel notes turning drier on the lushly textured finish. Delicious over the next few years.  — J.C.  (12/1/2011)

Baron Knyphausen 2010 Trocken Riesling (Rheingau)

Crop yields were down substantially in 2010, so perhaps that is why so many of the top estates’ entry-level wines are so exciting. This one combines hints of wet stones and moss with multifaceted citrus nuances and struck flint, resulting in remarkable complexity. It’s round and mouthfilling yet focused and long.  — J.C.  (12/1/2011)

Baron Knyphausen 2009 Hattenheimer Wisselbrunnen Grosse Lage Riesling (Rheingau)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $66
This is intriguingly scented stuff, with hints of honey, musk and truffles that come together harmoniously. The flavors run along similar veins, being complex and sweet without being obviously fruity; this is not a dry wine (28.9 g/L residual sugar). Finishes a bit soft; drink now.  — J.C.  (12/31/2011)
