Bearboat Wines

Winemaker Raphaël Brisbois, who started his career in Alsace, began making BearBoat wine for Rémy Cointreau USA in 1997. With the guiding principle to make wine that could stand up to all types of food, this Sonoma winery sources grapes from some of California’s most renowned AVAs, including Russian River Valley, Alexander Valley and Central Coast. Their lineup of single variety` wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah.

Bearboat 2007 Syrah (Russian River Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
Rich and soft, with a velvety texture, this lovely Syrah has forward flavors of caramelized blackberries and blueberries, grilled bacon, sautéed wild mushrooms, black pepper and sweet, smoky oak. The tannin structure is dense and fine. It’s very good now, with decanting, and hints at additional complexities over the next 4–5 years.  — S.H.  (12/15/2009)

Bearboat 2008 Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $17
Made in a Chablis style, this Chardonnay is bone dry and crisp in acidity. The pineapple and peach flavors are integrated with stony minerals. It’s not a complex wine, but is super-clean and zesty, a nice complement to shellfish, mushroom risotto or a perfectly roasted chicken.  — S.H.  (11/1/2010)

Bearboat 2007 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Rich, deep flavors of roasted blackberries, sweet red currants, grilled beef, bacon, pepper and sandalwood in this silky wine. The rich, spiky tannins and crisp acidity will play well against a charred steak. Now–2013.  — S.H.  (12/15/2009)

Bearboat 2006 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $22
A very nice Pinot, actually Bearboat’s best yet, that shows the dry silkiness of a fine Russian River Pinot, and also some complex layers of flavor. Cherries, rhubarb, pomegranates, orange zest, herb tea, clove and pepper all mingle together, enlivened by crisp acidity.  — S.H.  (12/1/2008)

Bearboat 2007 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $21
Sweet smoky oak and a boatload of fruit dominate this soft, tasty Pinot Noir. The aromas and flavors include sandalwood, vanilla, raspberries, strawberries, red cherries and bacon. It’s a pretty, polished and silky wine for drinking now with a nice steak or lamb chop.  — S.H.  (11/1/2010)

Bearboat 2008 Syrah (Russian River Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $17
An easy, gentle red wine, full-bodied and spicy, with extravagantly ripe cherry and blackberry flavors. Pretty good, but lacks those extra layers of complexity, so drink now.  — S.H.  (12/15/2011)

Bearboat 2008 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

  1. $17
There’s enough fruit in this simple, soda-like Pinot Noir to start an orchard. It has candied flavors of raspberries, red cherries, strawberries and cola, with oak contributing the usual caramel and vanilla. But it sure is tasty.  — S.H.  (11/1/2010)

Bearboat 2002 Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  1. $19
Nice and delicately structured in the mouth, an elegant wine with fine acidity and a silky finish. The classic Russian River flavors suggest cherries, cola, mocha and cinnamon spice.  — S.H.  (8/1/2005)
