The best Syrah of the vintage, a magnificent wine that blows you away through the force of its beauty and sheer voluptuousness. Pours dark and thick, and announces itself with muted but distinguished aromas of cassis, cherry pie, truffle, vanilla and smoke. Only in the mouth can you begin to appreciate the fantastic wealth of flavors. All this richness is reined in…

Extraordinarily rich, a tremendous Syrah from this unique vineyard in the heart of the valley. Black in color and bone dry, it explodes in concentrated blackberry, blueberry, cassis, mocha, pepper and sandalwood flavors, but even more impressive is the tannic structure: so soft, intricate and silky. Wonderful with spicy pork and beef dishes.

A tremendous wine, delicious and complex and easily drinkable on release due to the soft, velvety tannins. It has blackberry jam, raspberry, plum and chocolate flavors, and a distinctive cool-climate note of pepper. New French oak adds fancy notes of vanilla, smoke and cream. Although this wine is dry, it drinks as rich as a fruity custard.

Beckmen is one of Santa Barbara’s premier Rhône-style producers, and one of the few wineries that understands how to get Grenache right. This one, which has been blended with a little Syrah is just wonderful. It’s not only delicious in fruits and spices, but it’s balanced, with superb acidity and a bracing coating of tannin.

A full, intense, and complex rendering of the grape. Smoke, plums and lavender mingle with funky earth in the bouquet. Full mouthfeel, with meat, dried cherry, licorice and lots more. Layers of flavor, with good balance to boot. Very rich, juicy black-cherry finish, with toasty oak. Multidimensional; delicious now and will keep.

Beckmen Vineyards produced superb red wines in 1996-97, this being the third gem our staff has tasted. Here there’s a marvelous malty chocolate and cassis nose. It’s silky and sizable, with layers of black fruit. What oak it saw has been beautifully absorbed. Simply scrumptious Cabernet from a region not really known for Cabernet.

Dark, full-bodied, rich and dramatic, offering masses of ripe blackberries, cassis, bitter chocolate and cedar. Firm but fine tannins frame this impressive, dry Syrah.

Deliciously drinkable, this is one of the best California Grenaches in recent memory. Complexity is not Grenache’s strong point, but lusciousness is, when the wine is well made. The cherry pie filling, raspberry tart and cinnamon spice flavors, enriched with smoky sandalwood, are wrapped into pure, fine tannins. Drink now.
