BenMarco 2002 Malbec (Mendoza)
-
$20
This full-bodied wine veers toward jammy, with obvious chocolate-tinged oak. The palate is broad and brash, with floral notes accenting plum and black-cherry fruit. BenMarco, which boasts 12% Bonarda, is from Pedro Marchevsky, Catena’s former vineyard manager. It’s a tribute to his father, made by his wife, Susana Balbo.

BenMarco 2006 Malbec (Mendoza)

$20
Comes out firing, with hints of thistle, leather and campfire accenting blueberry and blackberry aromas. The palate keeps that same mix of herbs and black fruit, while the feel is rich to the point of suggesting berry syrup. With mocha, molasses and coffee on the finish, this is a big Malbec for near-term drinking.

BenMarco 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)
-
$20
Consistently a very good Cabernet, with big, broad roasted aromas backing solid black fruit. The palate is rich, rugged and powerful, with mildly baked plum and blackberry flavors. Oak and vanilla show up on the finish, which is round and the slightest bit herbal. Drink now through 2012.
