BenMarco 2005 Expresivo Red (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $35
Expresivo is five grapes that have been blended into an excellent whole. Aromas of dust, raspberry and simple spice lead to an alert palate of cherry and cassis. On its own the acidity may seem to stick out, but with food that won’t be an issue. Otherwise, there’s good posture and length, and the oak is integrated.  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

BenMarco 2002 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $20
This full-bodied wine veers toward jammy, with obvious chocolate-tinged oak. The palate is broad and brash, with floral notes accenting plum and black-cherry fruit. BenMarco, which boasts 12% Bonarda, is from Pedro Marchevsky, Catena’s former vineyard manager. It’s a tribute to his father, made by his wife, Susana Balbo.  — M.S.  (12/1/2003)

BenMarco 2006 Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Comes out firing, with hints of thistle, leather and campfire accenting blueberry and blackberry aromas. The palate keeps that same mix of herbs and black fruit, while the feel is rich to the point of suggesting berry syrup. With mocha, molasses and coffee on the finish, this is a big Malbec for near-term drinking.  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

BenMarco 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $20
It’s not as if this Cabernet is unique. It smells like many others, with jammy but generic red-fruit aromas that lean toward cassis and raspberry. The palate is a bit more complex than most, with herbs and black olive mixing with cassis and plum. Finishes with some lemony kick, good wood work and spice. With 10% Malbec, you can drink this wine right away.  — M.S.  (11/1/2008)

BenMarco 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Consistently a very good Cabernet, with big, broad roasted aromas backing solid black fruit. The palate is rich, rugged and powerful, with mildly baked plum and blackberry flavors. Oak and vanilla show up on the finish, which is round and the slightest bit herbal. Drink now through 2012.  — M.S.  (5/1/2010)

BenMarco 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon (Mendoza)

  1. $20
Berry, pine and cinnamon aromas make for a good opening, while the palate is lean yet endowed with solid plum and black cherry flavors. Quite pure and streamlined, with full tannins and perky acids. This is not a fat, flat New World Cabernet.  — M.S.  (12/1/2006)
