Benziger

Benziger Winery was founded in 1980 when brothers Bob and Joe Benziger sold their upscale wine shop in Scarsdale, NY to venture out west and start producing wine of their own. Their brother Mike and his wife Mary had purchased their first vineyard a few years prior, and shortly thereafter the entire Benziger family came to join the newly found Sonoma winery. After years of using standard farming practices, the Benzigers noticed the land was not as fertile as it once was. In the mid 1990s, Benziger Vineyards became one of the pioneers in the California sustainable farming movement transforming to a fully biodynamic and certified organic winery according to our Benziger wine reviews. Today, Benziger wines are produced from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and a handful of other varieties. However it is their top tier Cabernet Sauvignon based blends that are consistently found atop our Benziger wine ratings. Check out our Benziger wine guide below to see which wines are right for you.

Benziger 2008 Merlot (Sonoma County)

A soft, simple wine, this has flavors of cherry candy, spice and oak. It’s getting a little tired, so drink up now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2012)

Benziger 2002 Fumé Blanc

  1. $13
Citrus, melon and fig flavors are backed up with firm acidity, and the finish is a little sweet. Enjoy this refresher on its own, or with figs and chevre.  — S.H.  (2/1/2004)

Benziger 2008 San Remo Vineyard Signaterra Pinot Noir (Russian River Valley)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $49
A hard wine to like. It’s very dry and somewhat overripe, with a pruny, raisiny edge, and the acidity sticks out in a harsh way. This also is the highest alcohol wine of Benziger’s trio of 2008 Pinot Noirs, and it feels hot in an unbalanced way.  — S.H.  (5/1/2011)

Benziger 1999 McNab Ranch Petite Sirah (Mendocino County)

  1. $21
A big disappointment. There’s some good, ripe fruit, but the tannins are dry and rasping, and the flavors turn thin on the slightly hot finish. Seems more like a decent vin ordinaire than a serious red table wine.  — W.E.  (4/1/2003)

Benziger 2005 Chardonnay (Carneros)

  1. $16
A bit on the weedy, sharp side, with some prickly acids. Has just enough peaches and cream flavor to satisfy Chard lovers.  — S.H.  (9/1/2007)

Benziger 2004 Reserve Red (Sonoma Valley)

  1. $40
Despite the elaborations that have been lavished on this wine, from carefully selected, biodynamically grown grapes, new oak and malolactic fermentation, the wine feels soft and thin in fruit, leading to a hot, tannic finish.  — S.H.  (2/1/2008)

Bone dry and crisp, but unripe, with minty feline aromas and flavors dominating the citrus fruits.  — S.H.  (11/1/2009)
