Bernard Magrez 2005 Château Tour Blanche Red (Médoc)

  1. $20
A big, solid wine, foursquare and chunky. The fruit directs its plum fruit flavors to richness, some sweetness, with coffee and licorice as added complexity. There is a great tight wood element giving dryness.  — R.V.  (6/1/2010)

Bernard Magrez 2003 La Bienvenida Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $39
Frenchman Bernard Magrez is building a global brand via high-quality, smartly named wines such as this (La Bienvenida means The Welcoming in Spanish). But the cuteness ends there; this is serious Malbec with maple, leather and coffee aromas in addition to rich berry scents. The palate is integrated and deep, with lively acidity and tannins but enough cuddly fruit…  — M.S.  (8/1/2007)

Bernard Magrez 2004 Si Mon Père Savait... Red (Côtes du Roussillon)

  1. $50
Named in reference to the fact that his father kicked him out of the house at 12 years of age, this superripe cuvée of 46% Carignan, 30% Syrah, 19% Grenache and 5% Mourvèdre seems almost slightly nutty at first, then shows prune and chocolate notes that persist through the extended finish. It’s a bit alcoholic, but richly textured and velvety. Imported by Bernard Magrez.  — W.E.  (11/1/2007)

Bernard Magrez 2004 Paciencia Tempranillo (Toro)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $75
It seems that all of Monsieur Magrez’s new wines from around the world have a similar DNA: size, ripeness, plenty of new oak and ultimately quality. This big-boned Toro shows tons of ripe black cherry flavors darkened by bitter chocolate and espresso. It’s immensely oaky now and should benefit from a couple to 10 years on its side. Imported by Bernard Magrez.  — M.S.  (11/1/2007)

Bernard Magrez 2005 Château la Tempérance Red (Médoc)

  1. $20
The wood element is powerful here, giving a smooth, polished character to the otherwise tightly knit fruit. Flavors of bitter coffee, spice and barbecued meats are there, with the juicy acidity and a dense texture. The wine needs another year to come together.  — R.V.  (6/1/2010)

Bernard Magrez 2006 Château Haut Mouleyre White (Bordeaux Blanc)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
A fascinating—and unusual—blend of Sauvignon Gris and Sémillon, this wine is full of ripe, seriously opulent fruit, with peach and mango dominant. It is fleshed out with intense perfumes, rich fruit skins and kiwi fruit freshness.  — R.V.  (6/1/2010)

Bernard Magrez 2004 Château La Tour Carnet White (Bordeaux Blanc)

  1. $65
From young vines (planted in 2001), this is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Sémillon and a small amount of Muscadelle. Marked by toast and vanilla, it’s plump and round on the palate, finishing with some oaky spice. Imported by Bernard Magrez.  — W.E.  (11/1/2007)

Bernard Magrez 2009 Passion d’une Vie Red (Côtes du Roussillon)

  • Online Exclusive
Its red fruit-driven nose gives way to a significantly earthy palate, which also shows dried mushrooms and exotic spices. Full-bodied and generous in alcohol, this wine possesses somewhat chunky, though attractive, tannins. The acidity is fresh and balances the fairly rich texture. The finish is moderate. Drink now through 2015.  — W.E.  (6/1/2012)
