Blackstone 2002 Reserve Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $28
Here’s a wine that deserves its reserve status. It’s pure in varietal character, from the briary, white pepper, wild berry and coffee flavors to the sturdy tannins, and that feral edge of friendly aggression that marks a good Zin. But it’s a bone dry, balanced wine, with a distinctive individuality.  — S.H.  (12/15/2005)

Blackstone 2008 Sonoma Reserve Chardonnay (Sonoma County)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $15
Quite a nice Chardonnay at a great price. It’s rich and creamy and plump, with deliciously ripe flavors of pineapples, Asian pears, buttered cinnamon toast and vanilla. The richness is balanced by crisp acidity and a firm minerality.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Blackstone 1998 Merlot (Napa Valley)

  1. $18
Good color and quite a bit of charm. Some impressive aromas of blackberry, mocha, violets and smoky oak, and similar rich, deep flavors. The tannins are soft and inviting. It misses excellence by a hair, but it’s a very good wine.  — S.H.  (5/1/2001)

Blackstone 2005 Sonoma Reserve Pinot Noir (Sonoma County)

  1. $17
Blackstone’s been working hard on their Pinot, and with this new Sonoma Reserve line, they’ve produced their best ever. It’s a rich, dry wine that seems to have both cool- and warm-climate notes. Shows cherry pie, cola, blackberry tart and spice flavors, although it’s a bit on the soft side.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Blackstone 2004 Sonoma Reserve Meritage Red (Sonoma County)

  1. $17
Softly elegant and dry, this is a lovely Bordeaux blend to pair with a wide variety of meats and cheeses. Structure is the star, with grapeskin and oak barrel tannins framing delicate cherry, herb and earth flavors.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Blackstone 2005 Sonoma Reserve Merlot (Sonoma County)

  1. $17
This is a nice, smooth and fairly sophisticated Merlot for immediate drinking. It’s totally dry, with young tannins to cut through rich meats, and the cherry-blackberry fruit is balanced with an earthy, bitter coffee edge that gets the mouth watering.  — S.H.  (10/1/2007)

Blackstone 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

  • Best Buy
  1. $12
Here’s a nice, polished Cabernet that offers easy drinking right away, yet has some extra complexity that elevates it. It’s softly fruity, with finely ground tannins and a long, spicy finish.  — S.H.  (12/31/2006)
