Bodega Catena Zapata 2005 Catena Alta Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  1. $35
Since we last tried this wine, Catena has dialed back the new oak and pumped up the natural acidity. And the result is pleasantly akin to fine Burgundy. Now the emphasis is on refined, Dijon-style apple and peach flavors with great mouthfeel. Drink now.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2004 Catena Nicasia Vineyard Malbec (Uco Valley)

  1. $110
A studly Malbec sourced from the Altamira section of the Uco Valley, then aged 18 months in new French oak. Much of this wine is fermented in plastic bins (not tanks), and the affiliated intensity grabs your attention. The blackberry flavors are potent and backed by heavy chocolate and toast. Lots of mouthfeel and power, with tannic grab. This wine can age several…  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2004 Catena Adrianna Vineyard Malbec (Uco Valley)

  1. $110
Adrianna sits at 5,000 feet, making it one of the highest vineyards in all of Mendoza. The wine shows pure Tupungato mountain fruit, with deep chocolaty undertones and lots of fine, toasty French oak. For deep berry flavors and smoothness more than rough and tough, Adrianna is on the money. Drink now through 2011.  — M.S.  (8/1/2008)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2006 Catena Alta Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $55
There’s no drop-off in this wine from the excellent 2005. Expect blackberry, cassis and dry balsam wood/cedar aromas. The palate is lush and chewy, but also vital and lively. Toasty, dark berry flavors get a softening of vanilla on the finish. A winner to drink now through 2013.  — M.S.  (7/1/2010)

Deep, lush, balanced and oaky, with bacon, floral notes and huge raspberry and cassis aromas. Layered and structured across the palate, with concentration and balance to go with lusty cassis, blackberry, mocha and spice flavors. Finishes toasty and dark, with waves of espresso and mocha. Now–2015.  — M.S.  (3/1/2011)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2007 Argentino Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $120
Funky at first and simply not as smooth, pure and clean as Catena’s Nicasia and Adrianna Malbecs, which are the components of this wine. Argentino in 2007 is deep and dark like always, with coconut and cassis aromas preceding a sweet, ultrarich palate that’s teetering on candied. Quite oaky and chocolaty as well, with brown sugar and depth to the finish. Drink now…  — M.S.  (5/1/2011)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2009 White Stones Adrianna Vineyard Chardonnay (Mendoza)

  1. $115
Without doubt the most full and complete Chardonnay from Argentina that this critic has tried. It smells lush and toasty, with elegant apple and pear aromas. The mouthfeel is rich and balanced, while flavors of baked apple, vanilla cream and woodspice are endearing. Long and flavorful on the finish, and not overoaked. A serious Chardonnay to drink now.  — M.S.  (3/1/2012)

Bodega Catena Zapata 2009 Catena Alta Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $55
This is gorgeous on the bouquet, with earth, flower blossom, licorice and sandalwood aromas. It feels lush and layered, with ripe, happy flavors of sultry black fruit and cassis. Fruity, long and delicious on the finish, this is a very easy Malbec to dig into now and until 2015.  — M.S.  (11/1/2012)
