A little rough and rugged at first, but it eventually finds a groove that includes cherry and blackberry flavors backed by reasonable tannins and structure. A good jammy wine with no real frills or thrills but also no disappointments.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)

Bodega Familia Barberis 2004 Humberto Barberis Gran Reserva Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $30
Quite piercing and fiery at first, which announces that it is fully oaked. Along the way there’s savory notes, saucy leather and flashes of dark fruit. This would be a better wine with more fruit and flesh, and less barrel. The dill, vanilla and spice flavors are a bit too dominant.  — M.S.  (12/31/2007)

Jammy, with bubble gum aromas. Along the way there’s some talcum powder and mint scents. Fairly fruity and modestly smooth, with fresh, friendly flavors but also a touch of grassy green at the center. Imported by Ecosur Group, LLC.  — M.S.  (11/15/2005)

Bodega Familia Barberis 2003 Finca la Daniela Malbec (Mendoza)

  1. $10
Rather creamy and jammy to the nose, with flavors of cherry, plum and vanilla. Soft and fleshy, and a bit short on zest. Good enough with no overt faults; it’s just a bit flat and lazy.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Bodega Familia Barberis 2005 Finca la Daniela Chardonnay (Mendoza)

Honeysuckle and other sweet aromas greet you. In back of that there are flavors of pineapple, mango and apple. This runs crisp and tangy with more lemon-drop character than butter or vanilla.  — M.S.  (8/1/2007)

Bodega Familia Barberis 2004 Finca la Daniela Tempranillo (Mendoza)

  1. $10
Big and colorful, with soupy aromas blended with a waft of heavy berries. The palate is packed with anonymous red fruits, but the mouthfeel is pretty hard and miserly. Tastes reasonably good but has little in common with Spanish Tempranillo.  — M.S.  (10/1/2007)

Light and spicy, with snappy, lean flavors of cherry and cranberry. This is more tart and underwhelming than most Malbec fans probably want, but it’s not bad if you crave a lip-smacking red with zest.  — M.S.  (8/1/2007)

Seems a little weedy and green, but it's not overly "old" in nature despite having a number of years worth of bottle age. That said, those green-ish notes are confirmed on the palate, while raisin pokes its way through late.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)
