Nothing outrageous but this Garnacha, which now has a little age on it, is more than satisfying. The nose delivers cherry, plum and even a little cookie, while the savory palate features molasses, plum and spice. Subtle, composed and sort of old-school. Drink now.

A nice little wine for not much money. And while the $7 red has pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur, this holdover is dry, spicy, lean and fresh. It has a hint of herbal character, but also body, tobacco and dry red fruit. Good and sound on the palate, especially given the price.

A bit of forward oak comes across on the nose, while mocha and pretty good berry fruit keep things focused. Like most Navarran wines, this is snappy and “red” in character, with herbal tomato and plum flavors. Classic finishing notes of olive and dill close things out.

Initial aromas are squarely in the bell pepper/jalapeño mode, and later moss and earth enter the picture. The palate is basic, a bit acidic, and saucy, with herbal red-fruit flavors and a finish of tomato and basil. Struggles a little, but solid in a “country” sort of way. The blend is Tempranillo, Garnacha, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Bodegas Alconde 2003 50 Aniversario Virgen Blanca Red (Navarra)

Mulchy aromas of tomato and tobacco lead toward a raisiny, sweet palate that exhibits more than a touch of burnt character. Later it evolves into a sweet, medicinal wine with no shortage of mealy flavors. As a 50th anniversary wine it’s trying to be too much.
