Bodegas Bilbainas 1994 La Vicalanda Gran Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $46
Smooth tannins, lively cherry and plum fruit and subtle though judicious oak—a recipe for success, in my book. Finishes medium-long with more red fruit, plus some floral notes; nose offers smoldering, musky-earth aromas. Drink 2004+. —D.M.  — D.T.  (4/1/2003)

Bodegas Bilbainas 2001 Viña Pomal Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $15
Quite nice in the traditional Rioja style, and from a benchmark vintage. Pomal shows classic autumn leaf and wood aromas that highlight subdued cherry and molasses scents. The palate is properly acidic, so it places the lighter-weight cherry and tobacco notes in a proper frame. Turns oakier and more smoky the longer it sits.  — W.E.  (12/22/2011)

Bodegas Bilbainas 2003 La Vicalanda Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $20
Rich in color and aromas; the nose pushes soothing, fragrant dark-fruit aromas that carry a touch of perfume and violets. In the mouth, the wine is only moderately rich. With full acids and zest, it's not as hefty as many modern Riojas. Still, it's a well-executed Tempranillo with ample oak and good mouthfeel.  — W.E.  (12/22/2011)

Bodegas Bilbainas 1996 La Vicalanda Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $20
Stewy red fruit, earth and oak flavors are couched in woodsy tannins, which might give you the impression that this is a rustic, unfinished wine. Not true. Rather, it’s a tightly wound wine that needs time in the cellar, or a big hunk of grilled meat, to show its best. —D.M.  — D.T.  (4/1/2003)

Bodegas Bilbainas 1995 La Vicalanda Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $20
The oak aging this received is hardly noticeable under the rich cherry fruit, but it’s there, lending a silky, creamy texture and hints of vanilla. Mild tannins give this short-term aging potential, but it can be enjoyed now if you like your fruit forward.  — J.C.  (8/1/2000)

Bodegas Bilbainas 1997 Viña Pomal Reserva Red (Rioja)

  • Best Buy
  1. $10
This wine only spends a year in oak, so it’s no newbie. It’s rather distinguished, with cherry and plum on the nose and clean fruit that tastes right and ripe, not covered with wood it can’t handle. Refined and light, not dissimilar to a good Burgundy. Old school but good.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)

Bodegas Bilbainas 2002 Viña Pomal Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $20
Opens with familiar Rioja aromas of tobacco, wet clay, dried cherries and flower blossom. For a wine from a poor vintage, this is quite nice and natural. It offers red plum, cherry and tobacco on the palate, and overall the balance, mouthfeel and composure are positive. Not an outright great wine, but a real good effort considering the year.  — M.S.  (4/1/2009)

Bodegas Bilbainas 2001 La Vicalanda Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $20
Gets out of the starting blocks with raw, peppery aromas that soon fold in cinnamon and other powdered spice notes. The palate offers red cherry and wild strawberry flavors along with touches of dill and chocolate.  — M.S.  (2/1/2007)
