Bodegas Eguren 2006 Mercedes Eguren Shiraz-Tempranillo (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)
Best Buy
Price
$13
Seems like the best wine under the Mercedes Eguren label. This Shiraz-Tempranillo blend is wholesome, ripe and rich. It starts with earth, leather and dark, herbal fruit aromas, which are backed by lip-smacking blackberry and mocha flavors. Shows agility and balance, but also brawn and guts. Drink now into 2010.

Bodegas Eguren 2007 Tempranillo (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)
Best Buy
Price
$9
As a one-liter package you get one-third more wine here for the money, which only cements this Tempranillo’s Best Buy credentials. It’s a little roasted on the nose, but it doesn’t fall into the burnt or baked realm. Raspberry, plum and some coffee-driven bitterness make up the flavor profile, while the texture and length are both commendable.

Bodegas Eguren 2007 Reinares Tempranillo (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)
Best Buy
Price
$8
Slightly reduced but still balanced enough to give off a positive early impression. The wine is sweet, almost syrupy, but it’s that same ripeness that gives it more oomph and richness than most under-$10 wines. Finishes baked and almost stewy, but if you get at it early it should deliver all the black fruit and size one can expect from a value-priced offering.

Bodegas Eguren 2007 Reinares Rosé (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)
Best Buy

Price

Light berry and sugar cookie aromas kick it off, followed by peach pit and nectarine flavors. For a wine that’s basic in composition and a little dilute, it’s also fresh and held together by good acidity. Straightforward but solid.

Bodegas Eguren 2007 Reinares White (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)

A bit aggressive, with handsoap and citrus aromas. The palate is lean and clean, with lemon juice, grapefruit and lime flavors. Any way you look at it, this is an apéritif wine. Expect more from what amounts to a basic Viura and you’re asking too much.

Bodegas Eguren 2007 Mercedes Eguren Rosé Cabernet Sauvignon (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)
Online Exclusive
Price
$13
Rather minty and herbal up front, with grassy, field-like aromas overriding the red fruit that wants to peek through. The palate offers only secondary fruit flavors that turn to cider if given time. Acceptable but doesn’t offer much.

Bodegas Eguren 2007 Mercedes Eguren Sauvignon Blanc (Vino de la Tierra de Castilla)
Online Exclusive
Price
$13
Modest on the nose, and then very little after that. The flavors are basic lime and citrus, and the feel is tangy and lemony sharp. Generic, with little to no varietal character.
