Bodegas Guelbenzu 1999 Guelbenzu EVO Red (Navarra)

  1. $22
An opaque wine with a bright purple color brings red raspberries and fresh vegetables that integrate well with toasty cedar. Tannins are firm but not aggressive in this Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) Tempranillo (20%) and Merlot (10%) blend.  — C.S.  (4/1/2002)

Starts off a little slow, taking a few minutes to open from dull, forest-floor aromas into a mix of dried spices and vanilla. Where it starts to sing is on the palate, with berry and black cherry flavors that mingle enticingly with notes of pepper, smoke and herb. Finishes with tobacco flavors and enough ripe tannins to carry it through 2004. Best Buy.  — W.E.  (1/1/2004)

Bodegas Guelbenzu 2002 EVO Red (Ribera del Queiles)

  1. $22
Dark and clearly shooting for the stars. Problem is, there’s a fair level of green at the core. You get cassis, rubber and earth aromas, but also some celery and green bean. In the mouth, it’s mostly ditto: blackberry, milk chocolate and a strong wave of bell pepper. Texture-wise, it’s nearly perfect. Those unopposed to herbal influences will like it most.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)

Bodegas Guelbenzu 2002 Azul Red (Ribera del Queiles)

  1. $14
Pretty and floral, with sleek cherry fruit but also a slight hint of green that keeps it from achieving greater heights. The finish is simple and solid, with notes of burnt wood and pepper, both black and green. Will work best with food.  — M.S.  (9/1/2004)
