A bit thick and raisiny on first take, but with airing and swirling it becomes fresher. The palate is rich and rooty, with cocoa, prune, earth notes and tea-like flavors. Ripe and smooth on the finish, with no tannic backlash or lazy oak. Ripe as can be but still lively; drink now through 2018.

Despite its age, you can still smell sawdust, dry oak and resin on the nose. The palate is acidic and drying, with tight plum, cola and raspberry flavors. The finish warms up some, with caramel and roasted fruit notes. Nice and tasty, and ready to drink now through 2011.

A bit sweet and raisiny on the nose, but also dense and powerful. The palate runs rough and tannic, but there’s enough richness and extract to allow for that. Flavors of cassis and raspberry are dark but snappy, while the finish has raisiny notes but also some edge. This one may improve with time; drink now through 2013.

Slightly volatile and jammy, but still good for the price range. The nose is pungent and mildly prickly, but it settles in the long run. Like most RDDs, it’s intense and jammy in the mouth, with concentration and flavors of raspberry, tomato, salad dressing and even chocolate. If all this sounds a bit scattered and all over the map, it is. But as a whole, the wine…

Dry, dusty and minty on the nose, with cherry, cedar and sweet oak notes. The palate has a hard, clangy bite to it, while the flavors run toward herbal cherry and dried tobacco. Some vanilla and cola along the way bring up the pleasure quotient. Drink now.

Good wine from a very hot year. Early aromas of Band-Aid and barnyard fade with airing, and then forest floor and black fruit step in. The palate is expressive and tasty, with solid blackberry, tea and herbal flavors. Finishes dry, with mocha and chocolate. Drink now. Imported by Vino Cava.

Starts out odd and exotic, with blueberry and Middle Eastern spice aromas. Feels condensed and jammy, with full flavors of herbs, boysenberry and plum. Shows freshness along with simplicity, with finishing herbal notes of sage and tarragon. Contains 10% each Merlot and Cabernet.

Yellow in color, with honeyed peach aromas. There is no indication of oak, but it probably went through extended lees aging, which explains the wine’s richer melon, apricot and honey flavors. Almost Chardonnay-like in body and weight, but with more tropical, tree-fruit flavors and aromas. Drink immediately; it’s on the way out.
