Bodegas Riojanas 2004 Monte Real Reserva Tempranillo (Rioja)

Ripe and leaning to the dark fruit side, with spicy blackberry aromas. Feels round and complete as it unfolds, and not at all edgy. Flavors of plum, cocoa and spice come with toasty oak, and the finish is bright and snappy. Will age for another decade without much trouble, but it’s more than drinkable now.

The nose deals dill, coconut, vanilla and a lot of plum and berry. Soft but not really, with a lively but plush palate that starts with cranberry and raspberry and then deepens to show chocolate and spice. More of a middleweight, but one packing punch; would be nice with roast lamb, etc. Imported by Vintage Wines Inc.

Foresty aromas blend with cola, nutmeg and spicy berry scents. The palate is a touch clacky and narrow, with zesty acidity and flavors of lemon, mushroom and dried raspberry. Turns sharper and more angular on the finish, but overall it’s still a very nice taste of traditional Rioja.

Bodegas Riojanas 1999 Reserva Viña Albina Red (Rioja)

An old-school offering with earth, light wood, stewed fruit and tomato on the bouquet. Like a throwback to the days of yore, this wine emphasizes dried cherry, plum tomatoes and leather, all framed by tight tannins and lots of acidity. Not a lot of flesh on the bones, but will stand the test of time.

Shows some funk at the start, with red berry, earth and spice playing second fiddle. Raspberry and cherry skins are a force on the palate, with tangy acidity and mild tannins working the oaky finish. A simple, traditional Rioja. Imported by Vintage Wines Inc.

Baked and raisiny smelling, with kirsch. In a word, it’s stewy. Ditto for the mouthfeel, which is chunky and heavy. Features thick black plum, herb and carob flavors and feels beefy on the finish.

Unusual aromas of creamed corn and exotic notes are too unfamiliar to register properly. It’s thick but not entirely cloying, with powdered sugar and dried mango flavors. Weird stuff that probably won’t find too many takers.
