Bodegas Valdemar 1996 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $21
A lovable throwback, with stewed fruit supporting leather, pepper and smoke aromas. Solid as a brick, with mature berry flavors that happily carry perky citrus accents. Not a wine that’s fading; the fruit is vertical, with bright, healthy acidity.  — M.S.  (12/31/2004)

Bodegas Valdemar 2006 Conde de Valdemar Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $20
Opens with grainy, whispy aromas of reedy raspberry and smoky blackberry. Feels tannic and aggressive, so it punches ahead with lively, firm flavors of raspberry, plum and strawberry. Finishes oaky, with vanilla and dill notes. Bold Rioja to drink now.  — M.S.  (5/1/2012)

Bodegas Valdemar 2001 Conde de Valdemar Gran Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $35
Charred on top and showing roasted berry aromas underneath. This wine sizes up as a plump, round berry ball with low-to-medium acidity and soft tannins. It’s just mildly herbal and rooty, with a soft finish. It flows smoothly and won’t cause any eyebrows to be raised. Drink now.  — M.S.  (10/1/2008)

Bodegas Valdemar 2006 Conde de Valdemar Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $15
In many ways, this is Valdemar’s best wine in that it’s always consistent and satisfying. The nose on this vintage offers a blast of sweet coconut and then black fruit aromas, and while there’s acidity front and center it doesn’t come across sharp. Instead, the focus is on plum and raspberry fruit and a finish that picks up steam.  — M.S.  (10/1/2010)

Raisin and raspberry are the prime fruit aromas, and there’s smokiness to go with it. Fresh, tangy and not too heavy in the mouth, with classic Rioja flavors of raspberry, pie cherry, herbs and spice. Thorough and streamlined, with licorice and pepper flavors to the finish. Drink now through 2014.  — M.S.  (2/1/2011)

Bodegas Valdemar 1999 Conde de Valdemar Reserva Red (Rioja)

  1. $18
Earthy and solid, with bacon, coffee and leafiness to the dried-fruit nose. Chocolate and berries mix with stewed plums on the palate, and the finish is chunky. Medium in terms of tannic bite, with soft acidity. Drink now. Imported by CIV/USA.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Bodegas Valdemar 2003 Conde de Valdemar Crianza Tempranillo (Rioja)

  1. $12
Smooth up front, with a light veil of oak sitting on top of black fruit. In the mouth, flavors of raspberry and plum satisfy in a juicy, medium-depth sort of way, while the finish is cushioned by chocolate and vanilla notes. A crianza that gets it right.  — M.S.  (9/1/2007)
