Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2006 Vega Esteban Blanco Viura (Ribera del Guadiana)
Best Buy
Price
$8
From along the border with Portugal, this Viura-based white is surprisingly good and seemingly much fresher than past vintages. Bee’s wax, honey and mineral work the nose, and then crisp apple, pineapple and green melon flavors come on strong. Definitely better than average, especially at the price.

Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2004 Vega Esteban Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Guadiana)

Price

The west-central plains of Spain get hot and that heat is evident in almost every Ribera del Guadiana wine I’ve tried. In this case, the prune, leather and dry earthy aromas are controlled and solid, as is the blackberry flavor that works the palate, which is full, tannic and offers pretty good feel.

Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2002 Vega Esteban Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Guadiana)

Spice and warm leather on the nose are worthy aromas, but there isn’t much fruit and the palate runs gritty and acidic. It’s got freshness and fairly good purity; but it’s also kind of narrow.

Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2006 Cadencias de Vega Esteban Shiraz-Tempranillo (Ribera del Guadiana)
Online Exclusive
Price
$13
Saucy dark fruit leads toward a palate that’s hard, tight and full of rambunctious cherry, raspberry and plum flavors. The tannins get fiercer as the game runs on, and in the end it’s probably too tight and tannic to really enjoy.

Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2005 Vega Esteban Blanco Viura (Ribera del Guadiana)

Rather dilute and basic, with a touch of buttercup to the sweet, mellow nose. In the mouth there’s almond skin, melon and mild citrus flavors, while the finish is fresh enough despite being fleshy. Simple but fine; drink immediately.

Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2004 Leyendas de Vega Esteban Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Guadiana)
Online Exclusive
Price
$20
Peppery raisin is the dominant aroma on this condensed, sun-baked wine that surprisingly shows spiky acidity and a rugged mouthfeel. Seems like the winery was shooting for a riper, bigger style than its regular Vega Esteban crianza, and that heft and kick don’t really help.

Bodegas Ventura De Vega 2002 Leyendas de Vega Esteban Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Guadiana)

A wine in discord. The nose shows raisiny P.X. Sherry hints, while the palate is underdeveloped and tart. Shallow and almost too sour.
