Bouchard Pere & Fils

Bouchard Pére & Fils dates back to 1731 when Michel Bouchard set up shop in Volnay, buying and reselling barrels of wine. In 1775, his son, Joseph, acquired the first parcel of vineyard for Bouchard Pére & Fils when he purchased an estate in Volnay and a house in Beaune. Today, the domaine encompasses 130 hectares of vineyard in the heart of the Cote d’Or, with 12 grand cru holdings and 74 premier cru holdings. Since 2005, Bouchard Pére & Fils has been equipped with a state-of-the-art winery, The Cuverie Saint-Vincent. The 10-metre-deep cellar has earth walls, providing natural ventilation, temperature and humidity level controls, with no mechanical manipulation necessary. Big, firm tannins dominate this wine, which has powerful fruit and wood flavors. This is a wine that will age well—give it at least 10 years for maturity.  — R.V.  (9/1/2004)

Bouchard Pere & Fils 2004 Les Cazetiers Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Gevrey-Chambertin)

  1. $110
Deep, intense and rich fruit is the hallmark of this powerful wine. Dark tannins lie under the concentrated juicy black fruits, which have a strong streak of acidity. This is a finely structured wine, offering great enjoyment now, and the promise of five years or more of aging.  — R.V.  (3/1/2007)

Showing a delicate side of Burgundy, this wine is all about attractive fruits, plenty of raspberries, a layer of enticing tannins and delicious juicy acidity. It shows the richness, but also the seductiveness of Pinot Noir.  — R.V.  (8/1/2008)

Bouchard Pere & Fils 2005 Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Pommard)

  1. $66
A blend from several premier cru vineyards in Pommard, here is a wine that exhibits just the right firm but dusty tannins of the appellation. But because it is 2005, the natural exuberance of the fruit is also there, lively red berries under the dry structure. It needs some aging, but already the richness is there, along with a smoky aftertaste.  — R.V.  (8/1/2008)

Bouchard Pere & Fils 2006 Teurons Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Beaune)

  1. $55
A big, jammy wine with full ripe strawberries and sweet, juicy blackberries. The tannins are soft, and the acidity plays a balancing supporting role. Not for aging, but delicious to drink in the next few years.  — R.V.  (12/31/2008)

Bouchard Pere & Fils 2006 Les Pezerolles Premier Cru Pinot Noir (Pommard)

  1. $90
The relatively unknown Pezerolles Vineyard is at the far northern end of Pommard, touching Beaune above Les Epenots. It produces wine that seems softer than many Pommards, with rich fruit, the tannins firm but definitely playing second fiddle. It is the smoky plum fruit with just a dash of acidity that makes this immensely pleasing.  — R.V.  (12/31/2008)
