Ca' Rugate 2007 La Perlara Garganega (Recioto di Soave)

  1. $63
Inspired by the Italian word for pearl, La Perlara is a delicious dessert wine that boasts a luminous golden color and intense aromas of honey, almond, apricot and sweet yellow rose. There’s also a touch of piquant spice at the end that sets it apart, and the mouthfeel is indeed as smooth and silky as a pearl.  — M.L.  (12/31/2010)

Delicious and super-intense in the most beautiful way, this golden Recioto di Soave imparts aromas of honey, yellow rose, dried apricot and candied orange skin. It’s sweet and thick but not in a heavy or cloying way. Lovely.  — M.L.  (12/31/2011)

Ca' Rugate 2008 L'Eremita Red (Recioto della Valpolicella)

  1. $72
L’Eremita is a spicy Recioto della Valpolicella (a red dessert wine made from the same blend of grapes as Amarone) that boasts savory tones of cigar box, barbecue smoke, brown sugar and teriyaki. The wine shows some tannins with an otherwise smooth and creamy mouthfeel.  — M.L.  (12/15/2011)

Ca' Rugate 1999 Monte Fiorentine Garganega (Soave Classico)

  • Best Buy
  1. $13
This Superiore lives up to its designation, with more structure and weight than typically seen in Soave. The apple, herb and stone-fruit aromas and flavors have good intensity. The mouthfeel is full and round—yet there’s good acidity—making this attractive for drinking on its own. Finishes with a mild spice note. Best Buy.  — M.M.  (9/1/2001)

Ca' Rugate 2003 Red (Amarone della Valpolicella)

  1. $55
Started in the Soave region, this producer bought vineyards in Valpolicella to include hearty reds in its portfolio. In some distant way, those white winemaking techniques seem to be behind this Amarone. Its aromas are floral and soapy—wild rose and lavender—and very fragrant with undertones of scented candle or incense. The tannins are firm and the finish is long.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)

Ca' Rugate 2008 Monte Alto Garganega (Soave Classico)

  1. $39
This opulent Soave Classico is made from native Garganega grapes that see a bit of oak aging to acquire subtle tones of roasted almond and smoky mineral. Cool acidity caps the close and promises to match spicy chicken curry.  — M.L.  (3/1/2011)
