Cakebread 2006 Dancing Bear Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon (Howell Mountain)

$105
This is a very rich wine. Complex, too. With every sip, it seems to offer a little more of itself. Cakebread 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

$37
Lush and forward, with complex sour-plum, espresso, cola, vanilla and fudge aromas. Round berry flavors, licorice, Asian spice and pepper accents mark the palate. Full, but not heavy, with a long, smooth plum and cocoa finish. This is a stylish and elegant black knight.

Cakebread 2001 Benchland Select Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

The big ’01s are still rolling out. This one’s very fine and Oakville-y, showing well-oaked, lush black currant and cassis fruit, with a cocoa finish. It has soft, intricately sweet tannins. It’s quite delicious now, but seems balanced enough to age through the medium term. Drink before 2010.

Cakebread 2000 Syrah (Carneros)

Sleek and velvety, with a spicy edge to its bright, brambly flavors. Bing cherry, blackberry, currant, earth and herb notes are atthe fore, while a hint of cedar and pencil lead adds interest. The finish is clean. —J.M.
