Calicaro 2008 Liberty Bridge Split Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Delicious and appealing, a palate-flattering wine that offers a gorgeous structure. Waves of black cherries, raspberries, cola, sweet rhubarb pie, persimmon and pomegranate flood the palate, and then a crisp gate of acidity slams down on the finish, although the spices get through and linger long. Best now for sheer exuberance.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Lots of toasty new oak on this Pinot, which gives it a sweet roasted marshmallow aroma and taste. Mixed in are rich flavors of cherries, raspberries and cola, sprinkled with cinnamon and pepper. An exotic, powerful wine. Too bold and in your face now, but should gain traction over the next eight years.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Calicaro 2009 Poinsett Split Rock Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $48
A huge Pinot Noir, superripe and exotic in raspberry and cherry jam, persimmon, cola, cinnamon, clove and sandalwood flavors. Defines the Sonoma Coast, with a crisp spine of acidity providing bright structure. Bold now, all fruit and oak, but has the balance to develop bottle nuance through 2015, at the very least.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Calicaro 2007 Poinsett Hayley Vineyard Pinot Noir (Anderson Valley)

Not an ager, but lovely and vibrant now. With crisp acidity and an elegantly sleek mouthfeel, it offers ripe flavors of cherries, raspberries, pomegranates and cola, enriched with smoky oak. Gets better as it warms in the glass.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Calicaro 2008 Paris Mountain Lone Oak Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Lucia Highlands)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Direct and appealing now, like a cola drink infused with cherry and raspberry essence, with the caramelized, brown butter sauce complexities from oak barrel aging. That’s pretty delicious, and the finish is dry and crisp, but this is not a wine to age.  — S.H.  (6/1/2010)

Big and rich, front-loaded with blackberry and cherry jam fruit. The tannins are considerable, giving the wine a full-bodied mouthfeel, like Grenache. Delicious, but a bit ponderous now for a Pinot Noir. Give it a few years in the cellar to mellow.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Lots of honey-sweet peach, pear, pineapple and buttered toast flavors in this crisp, clean Viognier. It shows the opulence you expect in this exotic variety.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)

Calicaro 2009 Zig Zag Alley Zinfandel (Dry Creek Valley)

  1. $36
A good Zinfandel, rich and spicy in wild berry, tobacco, anise and sweet cedar flavors that are just a little sweet in alcohol. Easy to drink with barbecue, or try Vietnamese or Mexican beef dishes.  — S.H.  (12/31/2011)
