Callaway 1996 Dolcetto (Temecula)

$11
They call this grape the Beaujolais of Piedmont, and with good reason. Earthy, berry aromas with leather, tar and cherry, but extremely soft and silky. Notable for its deep, satisfying fruitiness. An elegant, pretty wine, and a great value. Best Buy.

Callaway 1999 Coastal Reserve Syrah (San Luis Obispo)

Aromas of bacon, blackberry, cassis and smoke are rich and inviting and make your mouth water in anticipation. The flavors don’t disappoint. It’s not a big wine, but a pretty one, with assertive fruity, peppery flavors silhouetted by richly textured tannins and acids and a dry, smooth finish.

Callaway 1999 Reserve Coastal Chardonnay (California)
-
$15
Starts with classic California Chardonnay aromas, including ripe peach and tangerine, smoke, honey, buttered toast and a nice burst of creamy lees. It’s very fruity (as you’d expect from this vintage) and sharp, with good acidity cleansing the palate. A very pleasant wine and well worth the price.

Smells intensely floral, an armload of gardenia and forsythia, with additional scents of peaches and kerosene. Has that strong Chenin flavor that always reminds me of hot sealing wax, but there are also apple, mint and peach notes. Just this side of off-dry, a nice, crisp wine with its own distinct personality. Good value.
