Callaway 1996 Dolcetto (Temecula)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
They call this grape the Beaujolais of Piedmont, and with good reason. Earthy, berry aromas with leather, tar and cherry, but extremely soft and silky. Notable for its deep, satisfying fruitiness. An elegant, pretty wine, and a great value. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (10/1/1999)

Callaway 1999 Coastal Reserve Syrah (San Luis Obispo)

  1. $16
Aromas of bacon, blackberry, cassis and smoke are rich and inviting and make your mouth water in anticipation. The flavors don’t disappoint. It’s not a big wine, but a pretty one, with assertive fruity, peppery flavors silhouetted by richly textured tannins and acids and a dry, smooth finish.  — S.H.  (12/1/2002)

Callaway 1999 Reserve Coastal Chardonnay (California)

  1. $15
Starts with classic California Chardonnay aromas, including ripe peach and tangerine, smoke, honey, buttered toast and a nice burst of creamy lees. It’s very fruity (as you’d expect from this vintage) and sharp, with good acidity cleansing the palate. A very pleasant wine and well worth the price.  — S.H.  (5/1/2001)

Callaway 1998 Chenin Blanc (California)

  • Best Buy
  1. $8
Here’s a pretty Chenin that won’t bust your budget and has some nice features going for it. Drier than most California Chenin Blancs, at just 0.65% residual sugar, it offers up lively citrus and tropical fruit notes, with pleasing acidity. Best Buy.  — S.H.  (9/1/1999)

Callaway 1997 Merlot (California)

  1. $13
There are Merlots selling for twice this price that don’t have the varietal character and rounded fruit of this wine. The finish is lingering, with good structure from start to finish.  — L.C.  (12/31/1999)

Callaway 2001 Coastal Chenin Blanc (California)

  1. $7
Smells intensely floral, an armload of gardenia and forsythia, with additional scents of peaches and kerosene. Has that strong Chenin flavor that always reminds me of hot sealing wax, but there are also apple, mint and peach notes. Just this side of off-dry, a nice, crisp wine with its own distinct personality. Good value.  — S.H.  (9/1/2003)

Callaway 2000 Coastal Chardonnay (California)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
Pleasant and refreshing with nice varietal character and good structure. Apple and peach flavors are clean and pure, backed by crisp acids. Little, if any, oak detracts from the pretty fruit.  — S.H.  (12/15/2002)

Callaway 2000 Coastal Sauvignon Blanc (California)

  1. $8
Fresh and grassy, a pretty wine with true varietal aromas of hay and citrus fruits. But it drinks richer than youÕd think, with pleasant peach flavors and a round, creamy texture. Great value.  — S.H.  (9/1/2003)
