Callejo 2001 Reserva Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $42
Quite dense and ripe, a trademark of 2001. The bouquet is bold and packed deep and full; you’ll find stewed plum, molasses, root beer and black cherry in quantity. The ripe, tannic palate is chewy and broad, with vanilla, brown sugar and spice. Imported by Quality Wines of Spain.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Callejo 2003 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $30
Pure dark plum and blackberry aromas define the bouquet, while accents of coconut and mushroom get into the game. An intense palate of cherry, plum and buttery oak finishes in a cascade of dark fruit and medium-weight tannins. Give it a year to come together.  — M.S.  (4/1/2007)

Callejo 2002 Reserve Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $44
Shows good fruit aromas, moderate depth and a touch of sandalwood on the nose. The palate features ripe blackberry and chocolate, while the feel is cushioned and chewy. Modern in style; just a cut below the 2001.  — M.S.  (12/15/2006)

Callejo 2002 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $26
Rooty and rich, and it hits stride with some airing. Fairly woody stuff, with maple and toast accenting beefy, sweet fruit flavors in the black cherry and plum category. Long and lasting late, with coffee and some lemon peel. Imported by Quality Wines of Spain.  — M.S.  (2/1/2006)

Callejo 2005 Cuatro Meses en Barrica Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $19
Wide and ranging, the bouquet on this young, lightly oaked RdD starts with campfire aromas before moving on to black cherry and earth. Convincing in the mouth, with chunky berry flavors that lead into peppery, vanilla-based finishing notes. Plump and easy.  — M.S.  (4/1/2007)

Callejo 2004 Cuatro Meses en Barrica Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $18
The muscularity and meatiness of the nose indicate ripeness, while the aromas veer toward drying oak and a bit of raisin. The palate is chunky and dark, with subdued berry flavors front and center. And the weight is up there, especially for a youngster that spent only four months in oak.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)

Callejo 2004 Crianza Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero)

  1. $30
Black fruit and olive aromas vie for center stage on the nose, while in the mouth there’s black cherry but not much nuance or background. Overall, the wine comes across linear and a bit green. And it’s brutally tannic as it transitions from midpalate to finish.  — M.S.  (6/1/2007)
