Callia 2006 Grand Callia Red (San Juan)

  1. $43
Until now all we’ve tried are Callia’s basic $9 varietals. So this is a big step up in intention, price and power. The bouquet is compact and sweet, with coconut, juniper and foresty aromas. Fresh and slightly grating on the palate, with spunky raspberry and cocoa. Turns more raw and rough as it expands, but overall we like this blend of Shiraz, Tannat, Malbec and…  — M.S.  (8/1/2010)

Tropical aromas are fresh and clean, and overall this is an active, juicy wine with bright flavors of pineapple, melon and lime. There’s pop, proper acids and drive to the finish; shows the good elements of the grape at an easy-to-swallow price.  — M.S.  (8/1/2011)

A big improvement over the 2008; this wine has some heat on the nose but otherwise it brings solid berry aromas. The palate has size and lift, with cola, black cherry and roasted plum flavors. Finishes thick and a little spicy and savory. Fresh, clean and good as a whole.  — M.S.  (11/1/2010)

Subtle and fairly deep, with aromas of berry, pastry and cherry cough drop. It feels lively and good, with blueberry and plum flavors in front of a textured, medium-deep finish.  — M.S.  (8/1/2012)

Neutral smelling except for some apple, however the palate is perfectly juicy and fresh, with proper weight and pointed apple, melon and papaya flavors. With tropical sweetness balanced by acidic bite, this falls into a nice place and then stays there for a while.  — M.S.  (11/1/2009)

Round and floral, with melon and other simple, clean aromas. Good mouthfeel, proper acidity and basic, likable flavors of citrus, green apple, green banana and tropical fruits make it a good quaffer and a good value.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Good berry and plum aromas send this out in solid form. The palate is full and grabby, with jammy, slightly herbal flavors of blackberry and plum. The finish is medium in length, with size and a spot of heat. Ripe, good and fresh for an under-$10 Malbec.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Standard apple, lychee and melony aromas lead to a measured, wet and lively palate full of apple cider, citrus and lychee flavors. Modest on the finish, with good acidity and round flavors of apple and melon. Recommended as a basic quaffer.  — M.S.  (3/1/2012)
