Capçanes 2001 Cabrida Garnacha (Priorat)

  1. $60
Pure Garnacha, which is anathema in the region. Savory on the nose, with roasted meat and spice notes as much as fruit. Once it hits the palate, however, the plum and berry flavors explode. Turns elegant as it opens, while retaining intensity. Flashy stuff. Imported by European Cellars.  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Capçanes 2007 Costers del Gravet Red (Montsant)

Score Chasers: Spain 2011
Well-applied oak is the greeting; it’s mildly lemony and minty. Tight and focused on the palate, with cherry and plum flavors and tannic structure. Turns a touch herbal in the midpalate due to 50% Cabernet in the blend, but the Garnacha and Carignan half keep it in the right lane. Tasty and stylish, with regional style.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Capçanes 2008 Cabrida Garnacha (Montsant)

  1. $55
A single-vineyard Garnacha that’s ripe and sultry. There’s earth and oak on the mineral-tinged nose and then smooth flavors of blackberry, baked plum and spice. Feels soft and mature for Garnacha, and therein lies the secret of Montsant: The better wines (like this one) have a pleasant, friendly quality to them.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Capçanes 2009 Mas Donis Barrica Garnacha (Montsant)

  1. $15
Smoky and dry for starters, then crisp in the mouth, with bright red fruit flavors of cherry and plum. Picks up oak, heat and sweetness on the finish, but overall this is exactly the type of flavor-packed red wine most people want. Grenache with 15% Syrah.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Capçanes 2001 Costers del Gravet Red (Montsant)

  1. $20
At 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Garnacha and 15% Tempranillo, this is a bit like a Catalan super Tuscan. Unusual for the region because you can really pick up on the Cabernet component. Overall it’s spicy, with hints of tomato, herb and pepper along with textured dark fruit. Good for the money; drink now. Imported by European Cellars.  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Capçanes 2010 Mas Donis Rosat Rosé (Montsant)

  1. $15
Raspberry and citrus aromas sit in front of a cheerful, sweet-styled set of juicy watermelon and plum flavors. This is about as simple as it gets, with a bright pink color, mild acidity and good balance. A wine to drink as soon as possible.  — M.S.  (11/1/2011)

Capçanes 2003 Mas Donís Barrica Red (Montsant)

  1. $12
This wine is a custom cuvée made by Montsant’s trend-setting co-operative for American importer Eric Solomon. It’s a bit like a Côtes du Rhône, but with more color, dark fruit and body. And it displays some of the region’s patented terroir, meaning it has that graphite-schist quality along with peppery notes. Imported by European Cellars.  — M.S.  (10/1/2005)

Capçanes 2003 Peraj Ha'Abib Flor de Primavera Kosher Red (Montsant)

  • Kosher
  1. $42
This old-vine Grenache is unique and surprising, with its touch of lilac and currant on the nose, followed by full-bodied, lush berry and currant flavors. It’s tannic and needs to age, but should develop into a velvety, integrated treat with a few years on it. One of the better kosher wines on the market.  — S.K.  (4/1/2007)
