Carmel Road 2003 Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)

  1. $35
The appellation is a distinct bench on the west side of the Salinas Valley, and this fine Pinot has benefited from the cool winds and long hang time. Marked by bright acidity and intense cherry, cola and spice flavors, it’s a dry, rich wine, with a silky texture and enough complexity to age through this decade.  — S.H.  (10/1/2006)

Carmel Road 1999 Chardonnay (Monterey)

  1. $50
A winning combination of pear, apple, ripe melon and butterscotch flavors, spiked with spicy clove and tart citrus accents. Lavishly oaked for a mid-weight wine, there’s sufficient depth of fruit here to support the wood, and the elements mesh and hold nicely. An easy, lush mouthfeel means it’s best enjoyed over the next year or so—if you can keep it around that long.  — W.E.  (7/1/2001)

Carmel Road 2006 Chardonnay (Arroyo Seco)

  1. $35
Very ripe and new oaky, but the acidity is so vibrant, it provides that much-needed balanced kick. Flavorwise, this Chard is a blast of orange Slurpee, pineapple tart, vanilla crème brûlée and cinnamon spice. It sure is an easy wine to drink.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)

Carmel Road 2010 Chardonnay (Monterey)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
The underlying wine, before the winemaker put it into oak barrels, was delicious in tangerine and pineapple fruit, brightened with brilliantly crisp acidity and a fine, steely minerality. The oak, which is modest, adds a richer coating of buttered toast. A great price for a Chardonnay this drinkable.  — S.H.  (3/1/2012)

Carmel Road 2007 Chardonnay (Monterey County)

  1. $14
This bottling needs a good vintage to succeed, which it got in 2007. It’s dry and crisp, but very rich in tropical fruit, pear, mineral and smoky oak flavors. Easy to find, with 18,000 cases produced.  — S.H.  (10/1/2009)

Carmel Road 2005 Pinot Noir (Arroyo Seco)

  1. $35
Actually from a smallish block of a large vineyard in this rocky, cool part of Salinas Valley, this Pinot shows a silky structure, velvety tannins and crisp acids. The flavors are rich and savory, suggesting cherries, cola, vanilla, smoke and mint.  — S.H.  (12/15/2008)

A sweet Pinot Noir, soft and rich in pie-filling raspberry and cherry fruit flavors, with a coating of smoky oak. It’s clean and precise and delicious, a wine to drink now with a nice steak or chop.  — S.H.  (8/1/2011)
