Casa Julia 2001 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

Right off the bat this wine is pure and smooth. The nose is pretty, with cranberry and cassis. Next up is a palate of pure red fruit and only a light shading of oak. The finish draws applause for its clarity and buttery nuances. It’s what a good Chilean Cabernet should be; it’s ripe and easy to drink, yet fairly solid and impressive. Best Buy.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Casa Julia 2001 Sauvignon Blanc (Maule Valley)

Opens with lofty, airy aromas of flowers and pears, and then in the mouth comes a full rush of grapefruit and orange pith. Finishes nicely, tasting of tangerine with hints of licorice and tarragon. In terms of mouthfeel, it’s a plump, medium-acid wine, so drink it now. Best Buy.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Casa Julia 2002 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

Full oak results in aromas of BBQ beef, chocolate and licorice. The palate is more along the lines of red fruit, with an herbal twist. The finish keeps form and the wine is balanced. Likable and easy to grasp.  — M.S.  (2/1/2005)

The bouquet is closed, with only a touch of prune, plum and cranberry aromas emerging. On the palate is raspberry fruit, a hint of veggies and some tight tannins. The finish is lean, and here those tannins assert themselves again in a way that’s more than the fruit calls for. Still, it’s pretty solid Cab. Best Buy.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Casa Julia 2000 Merlot (Rapel Valley)

Herb, black-pepper and wheat aromas lead to black-plum and spicy oak flavors in the mouth. Some dusty tannins give this Merlot nice texture; finsihes with decent length and black plum and oak-derived flavors.  — D.T.  (7/1/2002)

Casa Julia 2000 Reserve Merlot (Maipo Valley)

  1. $12
Rustic and medium-bodied, this Merlot has a nice spiciness that would be a big hit at a backyard barbecue. There’s some char on the nose, and a spicy-marinade note on the palate. Finishes with dryish tannins and outdoorsy, tree-bark flavors.  — D.T.  (7/1/2002)

The nose is all black fruit and some cinnamon spice. Next up is a palate of cassis, plum and cherry, while the finish is round and buttery. Taken as a whole the wine is fairly focused, with an easygoing character and nothing too out of whack.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)
