Casa Rivas 2005 Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon (Maipo Valley)

  1. $15
Crusty but also perfumed on the bouquet, and then quite snappy and a little edgy in the mouth. Red fruit is the dominant flavor component, and there are accents of coconut, olive and toast. It’s pretty straightforward as Chilean Cab goes, but it’s composed and flavorful. In a nutshell, wines like this are what people expect from the Maipo.  — M.S.  (5/1/2009)

Casa Rivas 2012 Reserva Sauvignon Blanc (Casablanca Valley)

  1. $15
The nose on this basic Sauvignon is likeable, with moderate citric bite and zing. It’s smooth and tasty in the mouth, with lime, tangerine, passion fruit and minerality. A cleansing, smooth finish confirms the wine’s quality. It says a lot for the potential of Chilean SB.  — M.S.  (6/1/2013)

Arugula, dark chocolate and faint cherry-vanilla aromas meld well with flavors of apple peel and a hint of white pepper. Red plum and dark chocolate repeat throughout. Light-bodied and fruity, with just enough acidity.  — K.F.  (12/1/2002)

Casa Rivas 2002 Gran Reserva Carmenère (Maipo Valley)

  1. $22
Herbal and cool on the bouquet, with a dark, masculine color. The palate is sweet and plummy, with berry nuances. Tannins come up on the finish, which is ripe and pulsing. Overall, it’s integrated and original, a decent bet within the Carmenère category.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)

Fresh and clean, as it should be. Round and full across the palate, with a forceful, direct orange flavor and little else getting in the way. Some lemon zest on the finish brings this easy drinker home. Not complex, but a nice quaff if properly chilled.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)

Meaty and seemingly ripe up front, with plum and strawberry aromas. The palate has a tight, firm feel along with flavors of plum, raspberry and bramble. Healthy and forward for sure, with a tight finish based on tannins and slight bitterness. A good food wine but one that’s limited in complexity.  — M.S.  (5/1/2009)

Casa Rivas 2001 Reserva - Estate Bottled Chardonnay (Maipo Valley)

At first, the bouquet seems dense and tinged with a mild lactic note, but that moves on rather quickly. The flavor profile of banana, pear and apple is perfectly fine, while the finish is a bit lean.  — M.S.  (7/1/2003)

Casa Rivas 2002 Merlot (Maipo Valley)

Spicy and meaty, with olive and leather aromas. While somewhat herbal, there are ample plum, blackberry and sugar-beet flavors. Definitely not your standard Merlot; this is a different breed, one that’s generally good but strays off course.  — M.S.  (6/1/2004)
