Cascina del Monastero 2005 Bricco Luciani Nebbiolo (Barolo)

  • Online Exclusive
This boutique estate was founded in 1926 by Alessio Grasso and is now run by his grandson Giuseppe. The generational shift has brought equal attention to tradition and technology and this wine shows aspects of both. Pristine aromas of wild berry, crushed peppercorn and white truffle make for a very compelling bouquet.  — M.L.  (2/1/2010)

Cascina del Monastero 2007 Bricco Luciani Nebbiolo (Barolo)

Smoky tobacco notes, leather, ripe fruit, cola, chocolate and chewy dark spice open the nose of this muscular Barolo. There’s a special tightness or sharpness to the mouthfeel that gives the wine a tight, polished feel.  — M.L.  (9/1/2011)

Cascina del Monastero 2004 Bricco Riund Riserva Nebbiolo (Barolo)

The 2004 Bricco Riund Riserva makes a very nice first impression thanks to the elegant and fine nature of its aromas. There’s a definite aromatic lift here, spurred forward by buoyant aromas of root beer, cherry, menthol, white stone and dried currants. Give it a few more years in the bottle to soft those firm tannins.  — M.L.  (12/1/2010)

Cascina del Monastero 2006 Bricco Luciani Nebbiolo (Barolo)

Here’s a Barolo with a light and delicate touch. Bricco Luciani offers a steady stream of currants, root beer, tar, licorice and dusty mineral aromas. In fact, the mineral component is decisive and adds backbone to the wine in the mouth as well. This expression focuses less on brawn and extraction and more on elegance and finesse.  — M.L.  (12/1/2010)

Sweet oak-driven notes of cinnamon, vanilla and dark chocolate appear at first, leaving only a sliver of room for the natural berry and cherry fruit to come forward. The mouthfeel is silky and smooth with a touch of bright acidity on the close.  — M.L.  (9/1/2010)
