Castellani Michele & Figli 2005 Cinque Stelle Ca' del Pipa Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

$95
Ripe and succulent expression, with deep tones of blackberry, exotic spice, leather, moist tobacco and Spanish cedar. There’s also a smoky, barbecue note at the back; the wine is thick, sweet and luscious in the mouth.

Castellani Michele & Figli 2007 Colle Cristi Collezione Ca' del Pipa Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

$52
This Amarone needs time in the glass to open and evolve. The bouquet is muddled at first, but after only a few minutes, brilliant threads of mature fruit, spice, mesquite wood and cola come into sharp focus. The effect is similar in the mouth, the wine is subtle at first but quickly builds in momentum.

Castellani Michele & Figli 2003 I Castei Campo Casalin Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

$80
Celebrated for its excellent Recioto dessert wine, this quality-minded producer presents a big, brawny red with deep concentration, oversized wood notes, toasted nut, sizzling bacon fat and barbecue aromas. It’s so modern, but also so lively, it definitely represents a departure from traditional Amarone.
