This is a top-notch Amarone, executed in a modern style, with incredible softness and intensity of flavors. The wine offers bursting cherry and currant berry fruit with playfully tart sweetness on the close. It’s a lovely creation.  — M.L.  (12/1/2008)

This is a generous wine that embraces your senses on all fronts. Penetrating aromas include cherry preserves, cola, black mineral and cedar. You’ll taste sweet fruit, which is carried over the wine’s soft and long-lasting mouthfeel.  — M.L.  (12/1/2008)

Ripe and succulent expression, with deep tones of blackberry, exotic spice, leather, moist tobacco and Spanish cedar. There’s also a smoky, barbecue note at the back; the wine is thick, sweet and luscious in the mouth.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Castellani Michele & Figli 2005 Colle Cristi Ca' del Pipa Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $50
There is a ripe, jammy element to this dark, concentrated Amarone but beyond that, this wine offers huge aromatic intensity and loads of personality. It is redolent of black spice and mature blackberry, and the mouthfeel is rich, chewy and long-lasting.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Castellani Michele & Figli 2006 Cinque Stelle Ca' del Pipa Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $95
A distinctly sweet, or chewy element distinguishes this Amarone and carries forth aromatically as Christmas spice, jammy fruit and mature blackberry. There is complexity as well thanks to the pretty background shadings of clove, mesquite and tobacco.  — M.L.  (2/1/2011)

Castellani Michele & Figli 2007 Colle Cristi Collezione Ca' del Pipa Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $52
This Amarone needs time in the glass to open and evolve. The bouquet is muddled at first, but after only a few minutes, brilliant threads of mature fruit, spice, mesquite wood and cola come into sharp focus. The effect is similar in the mouth, the wine is subtle at first but quickly builds in momentum.  — M.L.  (12/1/2011)

Castellani Michele & Figli 2003 I Castei Campo Casalin Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $80
Celebrated for its excellent Recioto dessert wine, this quality-minded producer presents a big, brawny red with deep concentration, oversized wood notes, toasted nut, sizzling bacon fat and barbecue aromas. It’s so modern, but also so lively, it definitely represents a departure from traditional Amarone.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)

Castellani Michele & Figli 2007 Cinque Stelle Collezione Cà del Pipa Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $75
Amarone Cinque Stelle shows fine tertiary aromas of old leather, tobacco box, drying mineral and sundried fruit. The wine imparts a comfy, warm feel that would help it pair with home-cooked meatloaf or beef stew.  — M.L.  (12/1/2011)
