Castelletto 1999 Trovato Sangiovese (Temecula)
Best Buy
Price
$15
Another super-Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, this darkly tinted wine opens with black cherry and smoke aromas, and turns silky and plush on the palate. The solid structure is locked into place with dry tannins. —S.H.

Castelletto 1997 Trovato Red (Temecula)
Best Buy
Price
$15
Dark, with black cherry and smoke aromas, this deeply flavored wine is sweetly fruity, with ultrasoft tannins. Some overripe notes of raisins and chocolate don’t disturb the pretty balance. A Super Tuscan blend of Sangiovese with smaller amounts of Bordeaux varieties.

Castelletto 1999 Sangiovese (Temecula)
Price
$16
This very nice wine startles the palate with a peppery assault, then calms down and spreads tart red cherry flavors over the tongue. Dusty tannins show up in the aftertaste. This is pretty good stuff, and it would be interesting to try it with rich Italian cuisine.

Castelletto 2000 Cortese (Temecula)
Price
$18
Try this as a dry alternative to Chardonnay next time you want a clean, fruity white wine. The citrus flavors are long on tart acidity, but there’s a creaminess that makes it very enjoyable. From Mount Palomar Winery. —S.H.
