Castello Banfi

Castello Banfi is a family owned estate vineyard and winery in the Brunello region of Tuscany. Teodolinda Banfi provided the inspiration for founder (and nephew) John Mariani to establish Banfi Vintners in 1919. It was Teodolinda’s knowledge of fine wines that ultimately shaped John’s choice of a career in the wine industry according to our Castello Banfi wine reviews. Castello Banfi wines are well known for combining high quality and value throughout their Tuscan region offerings. However they also produce signature wines that are available in 50 countries around the world, including the single-vineyard reserve Poggio all'Oro and unfiltered cru Poggio alle Mura Brunellos, as well as three proprietary cuvées, ExcelsuS, SummuS and Cum Laude. The wine they are most recognized for by consumers and critics alike is their Brunello di Montalcino according to our Castello Banfi wine ratings. In 2001, Castello Banfi was awarded the honor of European Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine at the prestigious Wine Star Awards.

Poggio all’Oro (a wine only produced in the best vintages) is a sophisticated and austere Brunello with just a tiny dab of sweet spice and red rose aromas on the bouquet. Beyond those are steady, savory pulses of tobacco, leather and dark cedar. The wine is plush, textured and rich, with a polished firmness that keeps it grounded on the palate.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Castello Banfi 1999 Summus Sangiovese (Sant'Antimo)

  1. $63
Luscious and bold, with a round, masculine bouquet of blackberry, bitter chocolate and a whiff of coconut. The palate sports perfect harmony; it’s full of cola, cherry, plum and espresso. The finish is tight and right on the money. Lovely stuff from a fine vintage; a wine made in the rich, sweet, modern style. The blend is Sangiovese, Cabernet and Syrah.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)

Castello Banfi 1999 Poggio all’Oro Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

Smooth and lush, with a ton of berry, cherry and smoke character. Supremely ripe and full, with chocolate and spice mixed into the prime cherry/berry palate. This is a wine for anyone who simply loves wine; maybe it isn’t ultra-complex but there’s no arguing about its polish and style. It’s incredibly round and likable. Imported by Banfi Vintners.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)
