The 2007 Excelsus is a gorgeous super Tuscan expression (with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) that shows quality and superior fruit on all levels. Castello Banfi has really hit a home run with this vintage. You’ll encounter persuasive aromas of cassis, blackberry, chocolate, tobacco, curry leaf and deep renderings of exotic spice. 1. $150
Poggio all’Oro (a wine only produced in the best vintages) is a sophisticated and austere Brunello with just a tiny dab of sweet spice and red rose aromas on the bouquet. Beyond those are steady, savory pulses of tobacco, leather and dark cedar. The wine is plush, textured and rich, with a polished firmness that keeps it grounded on the palate.  — M.L.  (5/1/2012)

Castello Banfi 2007 Summus Red (Toscana)

  1. $69
Summus is a beautiful Tuscan blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah that opens with a drying, dusty mineral feel followed by loads of plump, ripe fruit. Great care was executed in the clonal selection of Sangiovese and that variety delivers the wine’s distinctive territoriality.  — M.L.  (10/1/2011)

Castello Banfi 1999 Poggio All’Oro Riserva Sangiovese (Brunello di Montalcino)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $150
Smooth and lush, with a ton of berry, cherry and smoke character. Supremely ripe and full, with chocolate and spice mixed into the prime cherry/berry palate. This is a wine for anyone who simply loves wine; maybe it isn’t ultra-complex but there’s no arguing about its polish and style. It’s incredibly round and likable. Imported by Banfi Vintners.  — M.S.  (7/1/2005)

Castello Banfi 1999 Summus Sangiovese (Sant'Antimo)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $63
Luscious and bold, with a round, masculine bouquet of blackberry, bitter chocolate and a whiff of coconut. The palate sports perfect harmony; it’s full of cola, cherry, plum and espresso. The finish is tight and right on the money. Lovely stuff from a fine vintage; a wine made in the rich, sweet, modern style. The blend is Sangiovese, Cabernet and Syrah.  — M.S.  (11/15/2003)
