Castello del Terriccio 2004 Castello del Terriccio Red (Toscana)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $140
The aromas are clean, intense and penetrating and exhibit ripe black fruit with measured background shadings of spice, vanilla, toast and distant herbal tones. The blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot (with 25% other varieties) showcases the full beauty of its vintage in a feminine and understated way. But at the same time, this wine is determined and powerful.  — M.L.  (4/1/2008)

Castello del Terriccio 2004 Lupicaia Red (Toscana)

  1. $180
Lupicaia (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot) is said to be influenced by the eucalyptus trees that border the vineyard. Indeed, spicy green notes reminiscent of pungent peppercorn distinguish this wine and are at the core of a complex embroidery of aromas that include black fruit, spice and vanilla. Hold for five years.  — M.L.  (4/1/2008)

A very exciting wine with amazing elegance and linearity that delivers intense aromas of licorice, menthol, toast and pressed blackberry. Castello del Terriccio 2005 Lupicaia Red (Toscana)

Lupicaia is a beautiful blend of Cabernet with smaller percentages of Merlot and Petit Verdot. The wine is elegant, complex and layered with intense aromas of blackberry, cherry, spice, leather, smoke and Spanish cedar. It’s beautiful from start to finish.  — M.L.  (12/15/2010)

Castello del Terriccio 1998 Lupicaia Cabernet Sauvignon (Toscana)

  1. $90
A Type-A wine if ever there was one. It's high-voltage Cabernet, with just a touch of Merlot, and it's layered with cassis, buttery oak, and some toast. The mouthfeel is full but elegant, with mint and clove nuances poking through to impact the bold currant-laden palate. A smooth, well-oaked, persistent finish is the encore. Can easily be aged for a decade.  — M.S.  (8/1/2002)

Castello del Terriccio 2003 Lupicaia Cabernet Sauvignon (Toscana)

  1. $134
This is a first-class interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon with a fine point of chopped parsley embellished by contrasting aromas of leather, dark chocolate and plum. It’s compact and composed on the palate with a refined smoky quality, dusty tannins and lingering menthol freshness.  — M.L.  (9/1/2006)

Castello del Terriccio 1998 Tassinaia Sangiovese (Toscana)

  1. $55
Featuring Cabernet, Sangiovese, and Merlot, this New World red is big and powerful, with beautiful aromas of berry fruit, smoke, orange rind and spice. The mouth is fully enveloping and downright delicious. It finishes with a blast of black coffee and toast. Big-boned and aggressive, but still fairly friendly. Drink now or hold for up to six years.  — M.S.  (8/1/2002)

Castello del Terriccio 2005 Castello del Terriccio Red (Toscana)

  1. $70
There’s a very linear and elegant quality to this wine that recalls perfectly ripened blueberry and crisp cherry. Beyond those bright fruit tones, this blend of Syrah, Petit Verdot and other mixed grapes offers hearty aromas of smoked ham, crushed pepper and worn leather.  — M.L.  (12/15/2010)
