Castello di Monsanto 2004 Nemo Cabernet Sauvignon (Toscana)

  1. $50
The fine folks at Castello di Monsanto manage to always produce elegant and harmonious wines from Tuscany. This exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon shows remarkable quality both in terms of its flavor presentation and its territory-driven personality. The long fade is colored by blackberry, cherry and spice flavors.  — M.L.  (12/15/2010)

Castello di Monsanto 1999 Il Poggio Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $55
Kirsch, smoke and a hint of alcohol emerge from this muscle-bound, highly traditional Chianti. Cherry, spice and pepper dominate the palate, which leads into a tight-grained, heavily tannic finish. The balance is impeccable, as is the purity, but if what you are looking for is a wide-open, fruit-forward wine, this may not be your bag. Give it at least five or six…  — M.S.  (12/31/2002)

Castello di Monsanto 1999 Fabrizio Bianchi Sangiovese (Tuscany)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $39
More open and liberal than Il Poggio, this wine has damp earth, leather and black coffee aromas. The flavors lean toward cherry and berry, with leathery accents providing a balancing offset. The finish is dark and chewy; it’s something to mull, ponder and enjoy. The structure and perfect balance say give it three or four years before it peaks. Editors’ Choice. —M.S.  — M.S.  (12/31/2002)

Castello di Monsanto 2004 Il Poggio Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $50
Il Poggio is a Riserva in the true meaning of the word: it’s intense and generous and you can sense that a sophisticated oak regimen has been implemented to add just the just measure of toast. But the enormous appeal of the wine relies on both acidity and the quality of the fruit.  — M.L.  (6/1/2009)

With 10% Canaiolo, this Sangiovese-based Riserva opens with very pristine fruit and berry aromas followed by delicate shadings of leather and spice. The integration is terrific and so is the freshness of the finish.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

Castello di Monsanto 2004 Riserva Il Poggio Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)

  1. $50
In homage to Chianti Classico tradition, this Riserva sees Sangiovese with 10% Canaiolo and Colorino for added texture, saturation and intensity. It’s a firm, steady red that would pair beautifully with veal or roast pork.  — M.L.  (4/1/2011)

Castello di Monsanto 1999 Tinscvil Sangiovese (Toscana)

  1. $35
At 75% Sangioveto (a particular Sangiovese clone) and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, this beauty really pops both in the nose and in the mouth. It’s quite international in style, meaning the Cabernet softens the Sangiovese, yielding a sweet and ripe product that has both character and proper balance. Despite 18 months in oak, the ripe fruit of the ’99 vintage remains…  — M.S.  (8/1/2002)
