Castello di Valiano 1998 Poggio Teo Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Editors' Choice
Price
$24
This 100% Sangiovese wine is from a single vineyard at about 400 meters elevation and made of hand harvested fruit. Castello di Valiano 1998 Riserva Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Price
$24
Full and dry, with excellent deep cherry fruit, the Riserva is impressive, and slightly less dense and intense than the Poggio Teo. It is also (at least now) a decidely more refined wine. With its fine mouthfell and even tannins, it shows more evolution, but will still benefit from a year or two of cellaring and hold well into the decade.

Castello di Valiano 1999 Sangiovese (Chianti Classico)
Best Buy
Price
$15
This spicy mainstream Chianti pours on the cherry fruit and plenty of tangy accents. Made from 100% Sangiovese, it eschews the blending of French grapes made legal in the 1990s. Medium-to-full-bodied, it has fine fruit to acid balance and a dry, even finish. It will pair well with grilled foods or tomato sauces.
