Castillo de Cuzcurrita 2005 Cerrado de Castillo Tempranillo (Rioja)
Online Exclusive
Price
$85
Not too loud or vocal on the nose; it offers basic but entirely attractive ripe berry aromas. Tastes like blackberry and black cherry, with ample oak adding chocolate and vanilla flavors. Baked and rich tasting but it dries out well on the finish. 375 cases made; drink now through 2016.

Castillo de Cuzcurrita 2005 Señorío de Cuzcurrita Tempranillo (Rioja)
Online Exclusive
Price
$25
Stocky and kind of big on the bouquet, with broad, fat berry fruit aromas and some jamminess. The palate is saturated and jammy, with thick blackberry flavors and roasted fig. Chunky and on the verge of being syrupy, but still really nice in a rich, easy way. Drink now and over the next couple of years.

Castillo de Cuzcurrita 2001 Cerrado del Castillo Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$75
All in all this is a perfectly good wine. But in this pricey class and category we get picky, and we’re finding some reduced, raisiny aromas and a slightly flat, edgeless mouthfeel. However, we do like the wine’s berry and plum core and its intensity; too bad it’s not more evenly balanced.

Castillo de Cuzcurrita 2002 Señorío de Cuzcurrita Tempranillo (Rioja)
Price
$40
Black cherry and toasty oak aromas greet you, followed by racy raspberry flavors. There’s a lot of acid, but there’s also ample berry flesh and texture to handle it. Shows good quality overall but also some of 2002’s lean character. Drink now with food and it won’t be any trouble.
