Castillo de Monjardin 2000 Deyo Merlot (Navarra)

  • Best Buy
  1. $15
Delightfully round and pleasant, with aromas of plum, earth, pencil lead and redwood shavings. The palate is deep and developed, with a full allotment of berry fruits and sweet strawberry working the layer below. Finishes leathery and dry, but not drying. A centered, classy Merlot from Navarra.  — M.S.  (5/1/2004)

Castillo de Monjardin 2001 Deyo Merlot (Navarra)

  1. $18
Earthy at first, with foresty spice aromas that go from moss to sandalwood. Heavy and hard now, with big black fruit emboldened by full-grained tannins. Exotic on the finish, with chocolate-dipped raisin and some Bordeaux fines herbes. Will hold through 2008 and probably beyond.  — M.S.  (12/31/2004)

Castillo de Monjardin 2004 Deyo Merlot (Navarra)

  1. $18
In good vintages like 2004, Deyo can be one of Spain’s best Merlots. The fact that it is one of Spain’s only Merlots is moot when you taste Deyo’s warm and spicy black fruit, its fine-grained oak, and then all the coffee, butter and pepper that work the finish. A little tannic and grabby, but food will offset that.  — M.S.  (10/1/2008)

Castillo de Monjardin 2005 Crianza Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot (Navarra)

  1. $14
Brickish in color, with mature aromas of cedar, pine, tobacco, olive and dried fruits. There’s still some racy acidity that’s keeping the rooty flavors of tobacco, dried berry, coffee and spice moving forward. Finishes dry and a little bit classic; drink now for an affordable taste of Navarra.  — M.S.  (12/15/2010)

Castillo de Monjardin 2000 Crianza Red (Navarra)

  • Best Buy
  1. $11
Ripe and meaty, with a dark color and full, earthy aromatics. Airing and swirling break down the traditional leathery, stewy character to free black cherry and plum fruit showcased on a muscular, sturdy frame. Some chewy yet mild tannins seal the show.  — M.S.  (5/1/2004)

Castillo de Monjardin 2003 Deyo Merlot (Navarra)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $15
Clean and focused up front, with appealing cola, cherry and plum aromas. If you like wild berry flavors and juicy, borderline aggressive acidity, then Deyo fits your request. It’s a fairly rough, spunky wine with finishing notes of espresso and bitter chocolate. Should match well with salty, robust foods.  — M.S.  (4/1/2008)

Castillo de Monjardin 1999 Reserva - Barrel Fermented Chardonnay (Navarra)

  1. $20
Yellow in color and well oaked, with creamy, waxy aromas that convey richness. Flavors of honey, apple and lemon curd, and then an average, clean finish come later. Plenty of size and power are on display; if only the wine were more complex and subtle.  — M.S.  (5/1/2004)

Castillo de Monjardin 2009 Rosado de Lagrima Rosé (Navarra)

  • Best Buy
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $8
Very good rosé given the price, with raspberry and vanilla aromas along with just a touch of stem and stalkiness. Flavors of cherry and nectarine are full and borderline cloying, but with medium-level acidity there’s enough of a counterbalance. Functional in every way; serve chilled and you won’t complain.  — M.S.  (11/1/2010)
