Cecilia Beretta 1998 Terre di Cariano Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
Anyone who says the 1998 vintage is a step down from 1997 hasn’t tasted this excellent wine. The nose is rich and simultaneously complex: soy, marzipan, leather and poached cherries are all there. The palate is quite a treat: There’s snappy, acid-driven fruit as well as hints of orange peel, brown sugar and coffee.  — W.E.  (5/1/2003)

Cecilia Beretta 2001 Terre di Cariano Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
An exciting achievement, this select cru throbs with powerful intensity and complexity awarding a long list of adjectives to describe its aromatic qualities: black cherry and cherry liquor, leather, cola, milk chocolate and almond. Berry and bramble flavors make the mouthfeel lively and sophisticated and are a delicate segue into chewy-tart tannins and a spice…  — M.L.  (12/1/2007)

This is an extremely enjoyable wine with a dark, brooding personality and aromas of asphalt, black pepper, dark oak, molasses, exotic spice and dried currants. The fruit is ripe but not jammy and maintains elegance and harmony throughout.  — M.L.  (12/1/2008)

Cecilia Beretta 2003 Terre di Cariano Red (Amarone della Valpolicella Classico)

  1. $59
Cecilia Beretta is the top line of the Pasqua estate and this wine delivers the heat and power you’d normally expect from Amarone. It also imparts expansive notes of maple syrup, earth, cassis berry and distinct peanut or cashew aromas. It’s chunky and chewy in the mouth with good length. Pair with game meat or aged cheese.  — M.L.  (10/1/2007)

Cecilia Beretta 2006 Picàie Red (Veronese)

Here’s a ripe, sticky and succulent blend of Corvina, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot that opens with bursting aromas of candied fruit, black cherry, blackberry jam, Indian spice and raw tobacco. The wine won’t appeal to everyone and should definitely be paired with hearty stew or game meat.  — M.L.  (5/1/2011)
