Chanin 2007 Le Bon Climat Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  • Cellar Selection
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $45
Marked by aggressive acidity and some dusty tannins, this Pinot is not showing well now. It’s just too hard and tart. But the flavors are enormously ripe, and the finish is dry and silky and long. It all suggests cellaring to let the cherries, black raspberries and Dr. Pepper cola emerge from their tomb. Better after 2011.  — S.H.  (3/1/2010)

Chanin 2008 Los Alamos Vineyard Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $29
A very dry, acidic young Chardonnay, marked by oak influence. The basic wine is tart and ripe in citrus and peach fruit, while barrels add richer notes of vanilla cream and buttered toast. Lees stirring is evident in the Champagne-like yeastiness. An elegant Chard to drink now.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

Chanin 2008 Bien Nacido Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

  1. $45
A spicy wine, silky and light-bodied, with sour raspberry candy, mushroom and sandalwood flavors leading to a long, complex finish. It’s an elegant, polished wine, with modest alcohol . Seems best for drinking over the next few years.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

Gavin Chanin makes this distinctive, interesting Chardonnay. Shows a ino Sherry-like yeastiness, and is minerally and streamlined. Zesty flavors of limes, kiwis and grapefruits round out the finish.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

Chanin 2009 Le Bon Climat Vineyard Pinot Noir (Santa Maria Valley)

Extraordinarily ripe and fruity, like an explosion in a jam factory. Masses of raspberries and cherries, spiced like a punch, and brightened with crisp acidity. Drink now for freshness.  — S.H.  (10/1/2011)

Chanin 2009 Los Alamos Vineyard Chardonnay (Santa Barbara County)

  1. $30
A streak of green testifies to some unripe notes, which are accompanied by notable acidity. The wine is rather lean and angular, especially compared with lusher, riper Chards from the vicinity, but some will like its linearity and low alcohol.  — S.H.  (4/1/2012)
