Chapel Hill 2005 The Apostle Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  • Editors' Choice
  • Online Exclusive
  1. $30
With its shifting array of fruit notes, ranging from plum to cassis and red berries and its subtle hints of vanilla, chocolate and cedar, this is a wonderfully complex expression of modern-styled Cabernet. The tannins are soft, imparting a creamy, supple texture, while the fruit easily conceals the wine’s 14.9% alcohol. Delicious now, but should last through 2015.  — J.C.  (2/1/2008)

Chapel Hill 2005 The Prophet Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $30
This is a big, loud Shiraz, bursting with blackberry fruit and scents of cola, vanilla and toast. The flavors favor blackberries but also blend in hints of fruitcake and spice that easily conceal its 14.9% alcohol. Long and lush on the finish, this is delicious now but should also hold at least five years.  — J.C.  (12/31/2007)

Chapel Hill 2008 The Vicar Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $65
A brutish, muscular style of Shiraz, filled with intense notes of plum and tar and accented by hints of coconut and vanilla. Yet for all its concentration and richness, the finish is surprisingly elegant. Drink now–2018.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)

Chapel Hill 2008 Bush Vine Grenache (McLaren Vale)

  1. $29
This ripe Grenache is full-bodied and fruit-driven, but seems to have the stuffing to last at least 3–4 years. Cherry-berry flavors are punched up by herb and spice shadings that linger on the finish.  — J.C.  (5/1/2012)

Chapel Hill 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  1. $29
Score Chasers: NZ & AU 2011
Full-bodied and intense, this is a rich, ripe Cabernet for drinking now–2018. Cassis fruit is tinged with hints of mint, chocolate and vanilla, and while the tannins are velvety soft, the finish remains fresh.  — J.C.  (11/1/2011)

Chapel Hill 2006 Shiraz-Grenache (McLaren Vale)

  • Editors' Choice
  1. $18
Well priced for the quality, Chapel Hill’s Shiraz-Grenache is barely a blend, with only 10% Grenache. It comes across as a nicely complex, easy-drinking Shiraz, marrying mulberry fruit with hints of chocolate, cracked pepper and fresh herbs. The texture is plush and the finish long; a super value at under $20 to drink now and over the next few years.  — J.C.  (10/1/2008)

Chapel Hill 2008 The Parson's Nose Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

  1. $18
Full-bodied and supple in texture, this plummy Shiraz offers plenty of enjoyment at a realistic price. Vanilla and brown sugar notes frame blueberries and spice, with just a hint of bitterness apparent on the finish. Drink now–2012.  — J.C.  (11/1/2010)

Chapel Hill 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon (McLaren Vale)

  • Online Exclusive
  1. $19
Chapel Hill’s recent Cabernets have been impressive, and the 2006 continues that streak, offering complex aromas of green coffee beans, dried herbs and cassis, then easing into flavors of dark chocolate and black olive. Shows good density and richness, ending on notes of cofee and chocolate. Drink now–2013.  — J.C.  (2/1/2008)
