Château Canon la Gaffelière 2009 Red (Saint-Emilion)

  • Cellar Selection
  1. $110
One of the peculiarities of St.-Émilion’s classification is that Canon la Gaffelière is not classed in the top rung. Because, as this wine shows, it produces superb wines. This is ripe while so elegant, with great intensity and sweet perfumes.  — R.V.  (2/1/2012)

93-95 Barrel sample. Very complete, a wine that shows great freshness as well as impressive density. It has some Cabernet spice, allied to juicy black plum fruit flavors. This is going to age well.  — R.V.  (12/31/2009)

Château Canon la Gaffelière 2010 Barrel sample Red (Saint-Emilion)

93-95 A beautifully structured wine that is both ripe and elegant. It is bolstered by tannins, the acidity a great cutting edge. The black currant fruits are already delicious, although the tannins promise a great future.  — R.V.  (6/25/2011)

Château Canon la Gaffelière 2005 Red (Saint-Emilion)

A successful wine from Canon la Gaffelière. It is in a modern style with very polished edges of fruit, but the heart of the wine has a core of solid, dark, dry tannins. The wood gives spiciness, but it is the black, juicy fruits that impress.  — R.V.  (6/1/2008)

Château Canon la Gaffelière 2004 Barrel Sample Red (Saint-Emilion)

92–95 An intensely flavored wine, which still keeps elegance, ripe tannins and sweet, fresh acidity as its core. This will develop well.  — R.V.  (6/1/2005)

Score Chasers: France 2011
The wine shows both rich density and structure. It gives weight while remaining stylish. The delicious black berry fruits on the finish characterize a wine that is classic, balancing fruit and tannins.  — R.V.  (4/1/2011)

Château Canon la Gaffelière 2000 Red (Saint-Emilion)

  1. $50
This is the flagship wine from the mini-empire (now comprising five properties) that is controlled by Comte Stephan von Niepperg. He has made a modern, wood dominated wine, with rich, concentrated black fruits. It is powerful, perhaps too powerful, lacking a sense of the usual grace of this estate, although the ripeness of the wine does compensate.  — R.V.  (6/1/2003)

Château Canon la Gaffelière 2005 Barrel sample Red (Saint-Emilion)

92-94 Barrel sample. Stefan von Neipperg is making impressive wine at this property, which will surely be reclassified as Premier Grand Cru Classé this year. This 2005 is intense, polished, but still packed with a fine, elegant structure, with the added complexity of herbs and dried fruits.  — R.V.  (6/20/2006)
